These are the dialogues & actions which most in management never execute; this is that ‘people stuff’ talked about among managers over coffee, but then never actually take place!  Managers out of ignorance, fear of confrontation and/or out of personal insecurity, skip past all this.  They move onto other stuff seemingly more important – operations, planning, strategy, other resources & processes that can be managed.

The subtleties & undercurrents of transparency, relationships & consensus are unrealized by most in leadership roles. Thus in the vast majority of businesses, ‘People are NOT our most valuable resource’, not even close.  Most managers just kick things off with a great Intro about self & rah-rah speeches about what a great team we will be – and then never execute making it happen.

This is a compilation of intentional discussions, accountabilities & deep relational facilitations that WILL lead to success with your people – IF DONE!  This is how I would KNOWINGLY LEAD; I know this will work after seeing success in leaders for over two decades.  These concepts have also been validated by managers NOT doing this, thus failing or settling for mediocrity on their teams.

This is a plan for success for those in Leadership roles, whether CEO or front line Supervisor.  This is Leadership, not Management (maintaining) – about making things better, improving, growing & continuous improvement of Leader & Team.  Let managers do management while you do Leadership!  No theory here, just application & people realities; are you ready to KNOWINGLY LEAD?

Excerpt

Purpose & Introduction

The bottom line reasoning and purpose for this book is to finally provide how ‘I would do it’ for leaders. Many leaders struggle and lack executing important, transparent and real dialogues with individuals - as well as their teams. The 25 conversational-topics here are to help leaders successfully relate and therefore lead! I can also assure you that IF you execute and pursue the intent of these vignettes, you will also be teaching leadership – not just doing it!

If you are searching for an academic or theoretical resource on management, you will want to put this back on the shelf. This is a conversationally written book on application and practicality. This is a HOW TO, not a WHAT IS resource.

Those who know me realize I coach, teach, facilitate and consult in a very Socratic way. That questioning way of mine led to the focus of my first book ‘Teaching Fishing for Managers’. After a couple of decades and books planting seeds and encouraging leaders to think - I have decided to provide my answers and thinking. This is a plan of success for those in leadership roles, from CEO to front-line supervisors. If you lead a group of people at any level this will work. You will be KNOWINGLY LEADING!

Getting us started here, I will ask just this one question,
“Why do you believe you are leading; how do you know?”
If you are unsure; open to not knowing the answer to this question; or are simply still growing and learning - this book will be invaluable. If you are just beginning your leadership journey, this is your guidebook to success with people. Undoubtedly you will march past peers who are not having these conversations (and not creating effective relationships).

I am not trying here (as I did in other books) to create awareness or convince you of the value and critical importance of LEADERSHIP. I am assuming you have this book in your hands to simply ‘continually improve’ your own leadership; and to grow those you lead.................
