A tourist stops at a picnic area on land owned by Winthrop College. Walking into nearby woods to empty his bladder, he discovers a human skull. A police investigation leads to two of the four college students who are responsible for its being there, following a circuitous trail which includes a fraternity prank, the exhumation of a body, and newly discovered love.

As Ned read the [newspaper] article, he was wondering what made [Dr.] Matt Cates think that he might know something about the skull. The truth was that he knew more about it than he was willing or able to tell. In fact, he probably knew as much about it as there was to know, but the bonds of friendship and the strength of his fraternal oath severely limited his freedom to talk about it. He knew that as soon as he looked up from the paper, Matt would start asking questions. He took a deep breath and slid the paper back across the desk. Cates removed his glasses and rubbed his eyes.
