William slept fitfully, hunched in his coracle, his clothes chafing, still sooden from when he'd flattened himself on the bottom of the pond while the Crocidle Militia stabbed their spears at the mud. Now he was in Marion's little round boat, smaller than the coracle he had built to his own measure. His knees were uncomfortably tucked up to his chin.
He was exhausted from sucking at the water lily stalk which only allowed shallow breaths. Also, there had been the shock of what Marion hadn't said. He had seen terrible sorrow in her eyes. Had her father been taken by the militia? They crucified many captives, especially elders whom they realized were leaders. The prows of their swift craft were carved with menancing teeth, and their keels were lined with razor-sharp knives. They must have caught him. And it was all William's flaut - if only he hadn't gasped so audibly when he had seen a soldier at the sluice gate.
