A Choice of Freedom follows William Pope after a ship he is on sinks. He becomes a sailor on a whaling vessel and experiences Whale hunting, pirates, the slave trade, and finally joins the Rattler privateer to fight the British.
William Pope is apprenticed to a Massachusetts printer in 1775. He has been sent by packet ship to New York to bring back a new printing press, but the packet sinks in a storm. He is the sole survivor and is pulled from the sea by the crew of Felicity, a whaling supply ship. He decides to stay aboard and become a deep water sailor.
William sees whaling up close and visits several foreign ports. He helps fight off pirates when they attack the ship on the coast of Africa and observes the terrible business of slavery. During his eighteen months aboard Felicity, William makes several close friends and one enemy, a bully who attempts to kill him.
When Felicity returns to New England, William and his friends decide to sign on the Rattler, a privateer.
