This is the third in the maritime adventure series about William Pope during the American Revolution. William's brother has been killed by British soldiers and William is set on avenging his death. When the privateer Rattler takes a schooner off Africa, William frees the slaves on board and takes over the schooner to use as a privateer. Some of the foremer slaves become sailors. Pope takes the schooner to the Caribbean where they take several British merchant ships as prizes. He meets his former lady friend, finds the treasure of Calico Jack Rackam, and gets revenge against the British navy. On the way back to Massachusetts, Rattler and Jupiter must fight with a Royal Navy cruiser. Their return to Gloucester insures William a place on the next cruise which is forthcoming in A Topsail Schooner.
