Harry Hinsdorf was almost as round as he was high; if he fell down he would roll. But Harry was feisty, and not at all embarrassed by his rotundity. He stood to face his antagonist. "Fat? Fat you say? Is that the best you can do? Why not gordo as they say in this Spanish-speaking land? Or gras, as in the land of Cyrano? Fat? What poverty of expression is this? What pitifully deprived education spawned such childish chatter? Fat you say? He placed both hands below his ample abdomen and gave it a lift . . . it bounced. This is not fat - it is an equator - a globe. A whale would spout envy at sight of this enormity, cannibals would howl, Eskimos would weep, and you, poor soul, cry fat. I grieve for your vacuity, I pity your emptiness, I decry your paltry petttiness, I dismiss you. He tossed his head toward the ceiling and took the hand of his wife, a large shadow of himself, onto the dance floor where they began an exaggerated cheek-to-jowl tango as the band played Hernando's Hideaway accompanied by wild applause and good-natured cheering from the exuberant New Jersey assemblage.
