We CAN be our own worst enemy.....but no more!
Jane Freund is one author that I can always count on for supplying me with an abundance of applicable information. In her newest book, Best Friend Worst Enemy-Overcoming Self Sabotage in Your Life, the author uses a very interactive approach with helping the reader to understand that there are ways that we can set ourselves up for failure. Her goal is to help us turn that self destructive behavior around so that success is the outcome instead.
"Attitude is the key to success," Jane reminds us as she walks us through identifying and embracing the things that can sabotage our attempted accomplishments, such as procrastination, unpreparedness and negative self talk. By embracing them is not to say that now we can blame others or compare ourselves with others, but rather that we can do an honest self-assessment and set goals that will give us better focus, direction and purpose.
The author does a wonderful job of setting up an easy step by step format of implementing your goals so as not to get overwhelmed by the big picture but take it one step at a time. She reminds us that these habits we have created didn't get there overnight and it will take time to change. She gives an acronym for the word SLOWER to aid us in this concept: Share, Learn, Observe, Write, Educate, Read. One thing you will learn about this author is that she will tell it like it is, and that is honesty you have to love. If there is something you need to deal with, she will tell you straight up in her writing "Get over it." She is not trying to be rude with this but rather help the reader understand that no ground can be gained if you are wallowing in self-pity.
There were two great things I learned from this book. One: understanding that our regiment for combatting self sabotage may not look like what others think it should. She helped me to realize within myself that I am not taking these steps for others but for myself alone. The other was that many times a person KNOWS what their issues are in this area. They don't have to be told. However, if a person does point an issue out to us, we need to take that criticism and use it to refocus on how we are going to fix that issue instead of taking offense. Not only does Jane Freud share over 100 tips to add to your toolbox in overcoming self sabotage, she also shares encouraging stories of overcomers that will give you the courage to push forward.
Whether she is writing stories for children (Mooser on the Loose), sharing her own cancer journey (Eggshells and Elephants: My Cancer Journey Thus Far), or supplying tools for students (Use This Knowledge to Succeed in College and Beyond), there is always a lesson to be learned in her many books. I know this is a lengthy review but I am only trying to do this book justice in my own words. It is a must read for everyone, as we all have things that try to keep us down.
Practical Advice That Really Helps
With a caring and humorous approach, Jane Freund explains the characteristics of self-sabotage, how to recognize it in ourselves and how to combat it. She explains the self-sabotage we easily recognize and those little habits that we didn't recognize as self-sabotage. Then she gives abundant, easily understood tips for attacking the areas that are most difficult for us.
Advice without a structure to follow isn't worth all that much, so Jane then gives a practical, step by step method to set and achieve the goals that will help us overcome self-sabotage. And in a way that sets us up for success, not failure.
I won this book (paperback edition) in a drawing upon its release and am still working to implement Jane's suggestions in my life. But when I stumble, her book is a good way to work toward becoming my own best friend. I'm so glad to have it.
Are You Finally Serious About Change?
I love the one-on-one feel you get when reading Jane's books! She must have written this book for me, as she knows where I can tilt and how to get me back on track! I could immediately identify reading her list of common self-sabotaging issues which were my own. Next, Jane takes each issue and follows through with a step-by step implementation program for gearing up to turn around what in most cases has been a life-long habit. As with any "12 Step Program", you must sincerely want to change and be on the look-out daily for the honestly self-assessed issues. Change will not come easy or fast but can be successful with vigilance. Now go out there and newly armed with the necessary tools make a better you!
Fortunate indeed is the Man or Woman with a healthy sex drive, who has also learned the art of sex transmutation. For in the source of this vital power also lie the sources of endless Wealth, Health and Genius! And this book tells you exactly how!
