The two romances from When a Wolf Howls continue to evolve in this one. Diego has now taken over as pack leader for the Northwest Maine pack, and his wife Saoirse is pregnant, which makes him happy--yet like any man facing first-time fatherhood, he's worried since he doesn't want to lose her--or the baby. Saoirse's best friend Freddie is thrilled that John has moved off the Northwest Maine Academy grounds to live with him in Boston. But they have a major disagreement that needs to be settled. And John's wolf wants him to share their secret duality with Freddie, who like Saoirse, is a medical person not inclined to believe in creatures of the night--like werewolves.
Both of the new romances are interracial. Grant is one of the hunters from Canada. When Diego needs someone to take John's place in the hierarchy of the pack, Grant volunteers to move in because his wolf told him that the black she-wolf they saw the last time they were on the grounds, is their mate. He has no idea what she looks like as a human. As it turns out, Monique's a widow with children, so she ignores her wolf's desires, stalling because she fears her children won't be able to accept a new man.
And Nathan, who is on the book cover, hasn't had any love in his life since his parents disowned him when he told them there was a wolf inside of him. When his wolf mates with an unfamiliar wolf he has security let onto the grounds one night, he's thrilled to finally have found love--until he wakes up in the morning and she has no idea who he is, or why she's with him.

She looked into his eyes. "You're not mated," she stated hesitantly.
He shook his head slowly, "No."
"Why?"
He shrugged. "I've never lived in a pack before. I've never met female shifters besides my mom and my sister."
"Many of us choose non-shifters as mates. Diego did."
"Yes. But as I understand it, Diego's wolf and he both agreed from the start, that she was the one. Maybe I've never met the one for me."
He took a deep breath, before leaning forward also, to close the distance between them. He spoke in a low voice. "Or maybe I've met her, but I haven't told her yet."
Monique looked into his eyes quickly, alarm in her large, soft, brown eyes. Then she looked away, as if to hide what she was thinking.
The silence between them grew, as both of them seemed to be either conferring with their wolves, or considering what they were hinting at with their words.
Finally she looked up and met his eyes again. And when she spoke, it was almost a whisper. "Maybe she's not ready to hear it yet."
"Will she let me know when she is?"
Almost imperceptibly, Monique nodded. Then she got up and moved quickly over to put her empty cup onto the conveyer belt, and she exited the dining room.
Grant was trying to process what had just happened when Saoirse approached his table. "That looked intense. You need to think about something else. Let's go up to my lab and start writing down some of your ideas, and see where we should direct my research next, to look for some answers."
In a daze, Grant got rid of his dirty dishes, pocketed his phone, and followed her out of the dining room and up the stairs to the academic hallway. They continued down the hall until they reached the science classroom, which Saoirse opened with a key. She walked into the room and Grant followed her in, still trying to convince his wolf that the conversation had ended well.

This book really blew me away. I read the first one (When a Wolf Howls) and loved it - witty, smart, heartfelt, and sexy. "Worth the Wait" brings all of the same charms, delivering a complex, three-dimensional world of shapeshifters and the people who love them that had me laughing, in tears, and turned on in all the right amounts.
While the first book focused on one romance, this one tells at least four very satisfying romance stories which are intertwined by the location (a werewolf school in Northwest Maine) and by the politics and relationships of the Pack.
The first half focuses mostly on Grant, a muscular white man/wolf, and Monique, a beautiful and self-possessed Black woman/wolf who is the widow of a leader from a different pack and is now the second to the Northwest Maine Pack leader. Monique & Grant's wolves know that they are meant for each other, but Monique has to find a way to let a new man into her heart and into the lives of her children, whom she has been raising on her own since her husband's death. Meanwhile, Grant must prove that he's up to courting this powerful woman and helping to raise her family. The second half of the book focuses a lot on Nathan, a lean green-eyed white wolf/man, and his mate... Who I actually don't want to tell you anything about! Her story took me completely by surprise, and it blew me away - let's just say it's a crazy rollercoaster which plays with Ms. McGier's unique take on werewolves and you will love it. And she's a famous pop star!
Those two main stories are not nearly all that happens in this book - the characters from the first book play intimately into this one too. Saoirse & Diego and John & Freddy steal the spotlight and run away with it at various times in the book, and continue to be just charming as hell.
That variety is really what strikes me most looking back at this book - each and every story was amazing and very different in its own way, to the extent where it's impossible to pick favorites, and yet when I finished the book it all still felt like one novel. Ms. McGier juggles the stories so well and keeps you so invested in the characters at all times that it all feels cohesive and satisfying. If the first book was a good meal, this sequel is the giant dessert table you get after the meal with all the tasty things to choose from. Except you don't have to choose, you get them all! Enjoy.
