The story is about Lilly being forced to cope with living on her own when her rich father gets sick of her spoiled attitude and kicks her out the house.
The story is really about Lilly learning how to become independent.
Since AuthorsDen doesn't have a Screenplay section, I'm putting this screenplay in the books section.
09 Daddy's Girl v2.4
bottom
FADE IN:
INT. STEPHENSON HOUSE, WORKOUT ROOM - NIGHT
A woman walks into the workout room energized. She looks to
the left side of the room like she's looking for
instructions. Once she gets an affirmative, she begins her
stretches: legs, arms, and back. She gets on the treadmill
and starts off slowly. She eventually works to a light
sprint. Her bronze hair is swaying in the air as beads of
sweat form on her forehead. She is treading steadily when a
voice calls from across the hall; it is the voice of IRVING
STEPHENSON.
IRVING
Lilly, can you come here, please?
LILLY STEPHENSON, a blonde-haired, blue-eyed woman slips on
her silk slippers, and stops an attendant from putting more
tanning lotion on her. Lilly gets up from the tanning bed on
the left side of the room and walks over to the door. She
turns back to the woman on the treadmill.
LILLY
You can stop my exercises now. I
think I've exercised enough today.
Lilly leaves the room. The woman on the treadmill stops,
collapsing on the bars breathlessly.
INT. STEPHENSON HOUSE, IRVING'S HOME OFFICE - CONTINUOUS
Lilly walks into Irving's home office, which is filled with
all kinds of financial and business books. Irving was always
interested in money, so it was no surprise that during his
senior year in high school, Irving decided that he wanted to
pursue a degree in Business Administration at the University
of Southern California. He is now a very successful
financial analyst at Prudential. Irving is sitting down in
his leather swivel chair, reading glasses hanging low on the
bridge of his nose, looking at some sheets of paper. Being a
businessman, Irving has learned to be meticulous about his
life. Lilly looks at her father unsure of what her father
wants to talk to her about.
LILLY
Hi, daddy. What's up?
Irving holds up a credit card bill that is 5 pages long.
IRVING
Do you know what this is?
Lilly smiles eagerly.
LILLY
You bought me some stock?
IRVING
(sarcastic)
The way you spend money, your
stocks would be worth next to
nothing. No, this is this month's
credit card bill. The balance is
$8,000.
Irving looks down at the itemized bill, then looks up at
Lilly.
IRVING
Why did you buy a Louis Vuitton bag
for $630?
LILLY
Well, I had to have it to
complement the Donna Karan tees I
bought.
IRVING
Oh, the ones that cost $50 each?
LILLY
Yeah, they were so cute.
IRVING
Were? What happened to them?
LILLY
I wore them last week. I can't
wear an outfit more than once, it's
tacky. They're in the closet
somewhere.
IRVING
(exasperated)
Lilly, what have I told you about
your excessive spending?
LILLY
I dunno. Can't remember.
Irving lets out a sigh and begins to explain what he has told
Lilly numerous times before.
IRVING
You can't keep spending like this,
Lilac. I work hard to provide you
a secure future. If you keep
spending all this money, your
future will be spent in a welfare
office. You have to be more
responsible.
Lilly, pretending to listen to her father, nods in agreement.
She then begins to put on her "baby girl" act to get out of
trouble. This act has worked since she was a little girl.
At 14, she spent $200 calling Paris because she wanted to
know if there were any Louis Vuitton handbags there that
weren't in the U.S. Now at 21, Lilly has mastered her act so
well, she can get out of trouble of any magnitude.
LILLY
OK daddy, I'm sorry. I'll never do
it again.
Lilly goes over and hugs her father. Irving hugs Lilly back,
growing increasingly weary of Lilly's spending habits and
lackadaisical attitude about wasting money. Lilly leaves the
office. Irving is left slouching in his chair in exhaustion.
CUT TO:
INT. STEPHENSON HOUSE, LILLY'S BEDROOM
Lilly is in her bedroom picking out clothes to wear to the
mall. The room is an absolute mess, especially near the
closet. The floor is littered with clothes, that aren't
dirty, just disliked.
LILLY
Hmm, this pair of Tommy jeans seem
nice. I got a great Donna Karan
tee I can wear with it.
Lilly climbs over the mound of clothes and looks in the
closet to get out the tee, but the tee is on the floor.
Lilly begins to smile.
LILLY
Well I guess this means I have to
go to the mall and get a new tee.
Lilly picks out another tee to wear, puts on her Adisa open
toe shoes and grabs her Louis Vuitton bag and heads to the
garage.
CUT TO:
INT. STEPHENSON HOUSE, GARAGE - DAY
Lilly, with Louis Vuitton bag in hand, is in the garage
trying to decide which car to go shopping in.
LILLY
Hmm, should I take the Lamborghini,
Viper, or Navigator? Well, I dunno
how many things I'm gonna get, so I
better take the Navigator.
Lilly hops in the Navigator and drives to the mall.
CUT TO:
INT. MALL - SAME DAY
Lilly enters the mall and ponders which of her cards to use.
She takes out her wallet and looks at her three gold and
three platinum cards. Although she doesn't have a job, she
has credit cards thanks to her father. When Lilly turned 16,
Irving put her name on his gold card accounts, and at 18, put
her name on the platinum card accounts.
LILLY
Well, I used the MasterCard gold
for the dinner party last weekend
at Francois', so I guess it's time
for good ol' Visa platinum to be
put to use!
Lilly takes out the Visa platinum card, kisses it, and puts
it in her Capri pants pocket. Lilly puts her wallet back in
her purse and begins to scour the mall for shops where she
can use her weapon of choice. Lilly walks past J.C. Penney
and groans.
LILLY
I can't see how people can shop in
that place. They have the ugliest
clothes.
Lilly continues to walk when she comes across a March of
Dimes counter in the food court.
CUT TO:
INT. MALL, MARCH OF DIMES COUNTER - DAY
Lilly is greeted by a perky SOLICITOR.
SOLICITOR
Hi! Wanna make a donation to the
March of Dimes?
Lilly takes out her wallet and gets the $20.
LILLY
Do you have change for $20? It's
the smallest bill I carry.
SOLICITOR
Um, I think I do.
The solicitor, disappointed she cannot get the whole $20,
begins to search through the donation bin to find change for
Lilly.
SOLICITOR
Sorry, I don't have change.
Lilly puts the $20 back in her wallet.
LILLY
Oh well.
Lilly walks away while the solicitor looks at Lilly in
disgust. Lilly sees her favorite store, Neiman Marcus, and
makes a beeline.
INT. NEIMAN MARCUS - CONTINUOUS
Lilly walks in to look at the new shipment of belts.
LILLY
Oh My God! Look at this Prada
belt! I must have it!
A svelte SALESWOMAN scurries over to earn her commission.
SALESWOMAN
How may I help you today?
Lilly picks up the pink belt she has been drooling over.
LILLY
How much for this Prada belt?
SALESWOMAN
That one is $200.
LILLY
Two-hundred?
Mistaking Lilly's question for shock, the saleswoman tries to
convince Lilly that the belt is reasonably price for a Prada.
SALESWOMAN
Well, in addition to being a new
shipment, it IS Prada and this...
LILLY
(interrupting)
Oh, I'm not upset about the price.
That's actually pretty cheap for a
Prada.
SALESWOMAN
Oh, OK. So are you gonna take it?
Lilly smiles.
LILLY
Well, I need SOMETHING to match my
Louis Vuitton handbag, don't I?
Lilly shows the saleswoman her bag, who nods in approval.
She then takes the belt and continues to shop for more
clothes and accessories. Lilly picks out some designer Tees,
Capri pants, and dresses. She gathers all her new purchases
and walks over to the cashier. The total comes to just over
$1,000, which garners no shock from Lilly. Lilly leaves
Neiman Marcus with her bags and continues shopping.
CUT TO:
INT. MALL, NINE WEST - DAY
Lilly scampers over to Nine West to look at new shoes. Lilly
looks at the display of designer sandals.
LILLY
Oh my God, these Gabbar sandals are
to die for!
And this one is pink, my favorite
color? I gotta have it!
An ASSOCIATE comes over to help Lilly.
ASSOCIATE
You might also want one of our
jelly satchels.
LILLY
Do they come in pink?
ASSOCIATE
Why, of course?
LILLY
Well, then I'll take it.
Lilly buys $300 worth of shoes and accessories and heads out
to the Navigator.
CUT TO:
I/E. NAVIGATOR/MALL GARAGE
Lilly is putting her bags in the Navigator when she breaks a
press-on nail on her left hand. She starts treating the
accident as if her finger were broken.
LILLY
NO! I need to get to the nail
salon, STAT!
Lilly grabs her cell phone out of her purse and gently holds
her cell phone with her left hand and dials the nail salon.
LILLY
Darlene, emergency! I just broke a
nail!
DARLENE
Oh goodness! Well, we were about
to close, but this is an emergency.
Get over here as soon as you can,
and we'll try to get it fixed.
LILLY
On my way.
Lilly hangs up the phone and puts it back in her purse.
Lilly gets into the Navigator and closes the driver side door
with her right hand. She has now escalated the emergency to
a broken hand. Lilly hightails it to the nail salon.
CUT TO:
EXT. NAIL SALON
Lilly parks her car at the salon and a swarm of employees
surround the car. One employee grabs the driver side door
and opens it. Another employee carefully takes Lilly's left
hand and puts it in a splint. Another employee eases Lilly
out the car. Lilly is now being escorted inside the nail
salon, where DARLENE, a rubinesque woman in her thirties,
waits with baited breath.
INT. NAIL SALON - CONTINUOUS
Lilly is seated at a station and the splint is carefully
taken off. Darlene takes a look at the damage and is in
shock.
DARLENE
Oh yes, we're gonna have to
operate.
LILLY
Is it that bad?
DARLENE
Honey, we may have to operate on
your toes, too.
Lilly whimpers like a scolded puppy.
DARLENE
Looks like we need to sedate the
patient.
One of the employees grabs a vanilla-scented hair spray and a
sleep mask. He puts the sleep mask over Lilly's eyes and
then sprays the hair spray over Lilly's head. Lilly gets a
nice high. Darlene puts on a doctor's mask and medical
gloves and begins the operation. Darlene reaches out her
left hand.
DARLENE
Tweezers.
Someone gives her tweezers. Darlene puts the tweezers in her
right hand. Darlene reaches out her left hand again.
DARLENE
Scissors.
Someone gives her scissors. Darlene carefully clamps the
broken nail with the tweezers as she cuts it off from the
original nail with the scissors. She continues this
operation on the other nine fingers, each time tossing the
nails into a hazardous waste box on the table. Lilly is
still feeling good from the vanilla-scented hair spray and is
oblivious to the operation. Darlene then grabs a package of
new nails from a drawer on the table. She carefully opens
the package and starts to apply the nails to Lilly's fingers.
Once the operation is done, the sleep mask is removed from
Lilly's eyes. Lilly slowly opens her eyes, shaking off the
effects of the hair spray, and looks down at her nails. She
breathes a sigh of relief. Darlene looks at Lilly.
DARLENE
I think the operation is a success.
LILLY
Thank you, Darlene, you are my
hero.
DARLENE
All in a days work.
The salon employees all start applauding. Lilly gets up and
leaves for the Navigator.
EXT. NAIL SALON - CONTINUOUS
Lilly waves back to everybody and gets in the Navigator and
drives off for home.
CUT TO:
INT. STEPHENSON HOUSE, GARAGE - EVENING
Lilly gets out the Navigator and gets her bags and heads up
to her room.
CUT TO:
INT. STEPHENSON HOUSE, LILLY'S BEDROOM - EVENING
Lilly takes out her clothes and puts them on her bed. She
holds up each pair of pants, Tees, dresses, and shoes to the
room light. She holds up a pink dress.
LILLY
Eh, I don't really like this one,
after all.
Lilly tosses the dress on the floor and continues to analyze
her other new purchases. She tosses the items she doesn't
like on the floor while putting away the ones she likes in
her walk-in closet.
LILLY
Whew! I'm exhausted! I need to
take a bath.
Lilly undresses and puts on her pink chiffon robe to head to
the bathroom.
CUT TO:
INT. STEPHENSON HOUSE, BATHROOM
Lilly is relaxing in the bathtub enjoying her mineral bubble
bath.
LILLY
Ah, now this is how you relax!
Lilly slinks down further in the bath. Lilly finishes her
bath, gets dressed and heads downstairs for dinner.
CUT TO:
INT. STEPHENSON HOUSE, DINING ROOM - NIGHT
Irving and Lilly are at the dinner table eating. Irving is
eating his dinner while reading the evening newspaper. Lilly
finishes eating and puts her dishes on top of the mound of
already dirty dishes in the sink. She walks over to the
fridge to get something to drink. Lilly walks back to the
table with the carton of juice and her glass and sits down
with her drink. Irving looks up at Lilly.
IRVING
When are you gonna wash the dishes?
LILLY
The dishwasher is broken, remember?
You called the repairman yesterday.
IRVING
You can wash the dishes by hand, ya
know?
LILLY
With all that icky stuff in there?
Uh...no!
IRVING
(sighing)
Lilly, when are you gonna grow up
and take some responsibility?
LILLY
I brought in the mail yesterday,
didn't I?
IRVING
That's because you got a package
from Neiman Marcus.
Irving picks up the juice carton expecting to pour juice in
his glass only to find the carton empty. Irving holds his
pouring action to show Lilly. He looks at her.
IRVING
(exasperated)
This is what I'm talking about,
Lilly. It's these type of things
that's made me come to a decision.
Irving puts down the carton, gets up from the table and paces
around, trying to find the right words. Lilly looks at her
father, and sensing something is wrong, begins to put on the
"baby girl" act.
LILLY
What decision, daddy?
IRVING
I've decided that you need to
either get a job or move out.
LILLY
What? Why?
IRVING
I want you to be more mature. You
don't wash the dishes.
You don't take out the garbage.
Hell, you don't even clean your
room! You have one week to get AND
keep a job or you're moving out.
Shocked with the sudden news, Lilly becomes nervous and
starts to put her act into overdrive.
LILLY
Daddy, why? I thought I was your
little princess?
Sensing the act, Irving is resilient in his decision. He
looks at Lilly with a sly grin. His expression changes from
slyness to seriousness as he gets the paper and slams it on
the table in front of Lilly.
IRVING
Start looking for a job.
Irving then leaves the dining room to let Lilly look for a
job. Lilly slinks back in her chair in a huff, crossing her
arms, obviously disappointed that her act no longer works on
her father.
LILLY
I can't believe he's doing this.
Why do I have to go through this?
This is soo not fair!
Lilly then gets up and goes to her room to talk to Marcie and
then goes to sleep. Later, Irving comes back to the dining
room and sees the newspaper still there. He shakes his head
in disappointment and leaves.
CUT TO:
INT. STEPHENSON HOUSE, HALLWAY - DAY
The next morning, Irving taps on the door to Lilly's bedroom.
Not getting an answer, he taps again. Annoyed, Irving comes
in without being acknowledged by Lilly.
INT. STEPHENSON HOUSE, LILLY'S BEDROOM - CONTINUOUS
Lilly is lying on her bed talking to Marcie.
LILLY
Can you believe that, Marcie? He
wants me to start looking for a
job! Me? Who does he think I am?
Irving looks on in disbelief after what Lilly just said.
LILLY
(talking to Marcie)
Why would I work? I have
everything I could ever want.
Irving drops the newspaper on her desk which garners no
attention from Lilly.
IRVING
Lilly, have you started looking for
a job?
Lilly ignores her father and continues to talk on the phone.
Seeing this, Irving gets Lilly's purse and takes out her Visa
gold card. Irving gets a pair of scissors off Lilly's desk.
He moves the scissors and the card in front of Lilly. Lilly
slowly pulls the phone away from her ears and looks on in
astonishment.
IRVING
You won't be needing this anymore.
Irving cuts the card in front of Lilly. Lilly drops the
phone.
LILLY
(in shock)
DADDY!! How can you do that?
IRVING
I told you to start looking for a
job. Have you done that?
LILLY
You were serious about that?
Irving takes out the Visa platinum card and begins to repeat
the process. Lilly puts up her hand to stop her father.
LILLY
OK, OK! You're serious.
IRVING
Please, Lilly. Look for a job. I
don't want to kick you out.
Lilly finally realizes that this is no joke and gives in to
her father's order.
LILLY
Fine.
Irving leaves Lilly's bedroom and goes to his room. Lilly
sees the newspaper on her desk and gets up from the bed.
Lilly begins to look through the classified ads circling
possible jobs. Lilly sees an opening for a fashion buyer.
She thinks to herself that she buys clothes all the time; she
would be a cinch for the job. She calls the number and talks
to the HR REPRESENTATIVE.
HR REPRESENTATIVE
We're looking for someone with a
fashion marketing degree. What
degree do you have?
LILLY
What do you mean?
HR REPRESENTATIVE
We are looking for a bachelor's
degree in fashion marketing.
LILLY
What! This is sexist, why can't a
bachelorette apply for this job!
I'm gonna report you!
The representative's annoyance is conveyed through her voice
at Lilly's short-sightedness. The representative starts to
speak at a slower pace.
HR REPRESENTATIVE
Ma'am, we are looking for anyone,
male or female, who has gone to a
four year accredited college or
university and has obtained a
degree in fashion marketing.
LILLY
(sotto)
Oh. Sorry, I didn't know. Well, I
don't have that...
HR REPRESENTATIVE
Well, thank you for your interest.
Goodbye.
The representative promptly hangs up and Lilly continues to
look through the classified ads.
LILLY
Damn! A lot of these jobs require
bachelor's degrees in one thing or
another. I think I need a break.
Lilly leaves her bedroom to head downstairs.
CUT TO:
INT. STEPHENSON HOUSE, HALLWAY
Lilly goes downstairs but is interrupted by her father who is
coming out of his office.
IRVING
How's the job search going?
LILLY
Not good, daddy. Everybody is
looking for people with bachelor's
degrees.
IRVING
Have you went out and looked for
other jobs? Like a part-time job
at the mall, since you like to be
there so much. Or how about the
post office? You can get your
packages without having to wait for
them here.
Lilly ponders her father's suggestions.
LILLY
Eh, I dunno. I don't want to work
where normal people are.
IRVING
Normal people? Honey, you need a
job. In order to get the things
you want, you're gonna have to do
things you don't want to do. It's
called sacrifice. Just go out and
give it a try.
LILLY
OK, daddy, I will.
Armed with another route to getting a job, Lilly goes back in
her room, grabs her purse and heads out to look for a job in
the Viper.
CUT TO:
INT. POST OFFICE
Lilly enters a post office that is filled with people trying
to send packages to loved ones, checks to cable companies,
and sweepstakes entry forms to Ed McMahon. Lilly gets in
line and waits to speak to a POST OFFICE EMPLOYEE.
POST OFFICE EMPLOYEE
Yes, how may I help you?
LILLY
I'm here to find a job. Are there
any openings here?
POST OFFICE EMPLOYEE
Oh, OK. Yeah, we have an opening
for a sorter. Just fill out this
application.
The post office employee reaches into a drawer under the
counter and takes out an application and gives it to Lilly.
LILLY
Cool, thanks. Um, can I ask you a
question?
POST OFFICE EMPLOYEE
Sure, what is it?
LILLY
Do I have to wear that uniform?
Lilly points to the post office employee's blue uniform.
POST OFFICE EMPLOYEE
Yep, you sure do. Why is there
anything wrong?
Lilly is disappointed that she has to wear such an ugly
looking uniform.
LILLY
I was hoping I can wear like a DKNY
Tee, you know, to liven up my
appearance.
POST OFFICE EMPLOYEE
Sorry, hun, can't do that here.
Maybe at The Limited.
LILLY
OK, well, thank you, anyway.
Lilly puts down the application and walks off disappointed as
the post office employee looks at Lilly at disbelief that a
woman rejects a job opportunity just because she doesn't like
the uniform.
CUT TO:
INT. VIPER - CONTINUOUS
Depressed about her job prospects, Lilly decides to take a
break and head over to Burger Barn to get something to eat.
Lilly goes to drive-thru and makes her order to a BURGER BARN
EMPLOYEE on the intercom.
LILLY
Yes, I would like to have large
fries, a cheeseburger and a
milkshake.
BURGER BARN EMPLOYEE
That'd be $1.76, drive around.
LILLY
(to herself)
$1.76? That's pretty cheap.
Lilly drives around to the pickup window. Lilly gets her
order and pays her money. As Lilly drives off, she looks in
her bag and only sees large fries. She makes a U-turn and
heads back to Burger Barn.
CUT TO:
INT. BURGER BARN
Lilly storms into the restaurant, toward the head counter and
the pimple-laced CASHIER
LILLY
Hey! You messed up my order!
CASHIER
You said large fries.
LILLY
And a cheeseburger and a milkshake.
I want my cheeseburger and
milkshake
The MANAGER walks over to the confrontation to settle things
down.
MANAGER
What seems to be the problem?
LILLY
I ordered a large fries, a
cheeseburger, and a milkshake. All
I got was the large fries. Geez, I
could do a better job of this than
her.
The manager decides to take Lilly up on her offer.
MANAGER
Oh really? Well, we do have an
opening for a cashier. Want it?
Lilly, surprised at the job offer, decides to take the job.
LILLY
I'll take it. When do I start?
MANAGER
Right now. Come with me.
The manager takes Lilly into the her office.
INT. BURGER BARN, MANAGER'S OFFICE - CONTINUOUS
The manager walks over to a filing cabinet and pulls out an
application for Lilly to fill out. Lilly begins filling out
the application.
MANAGER
Do you have any questions?
LILLY
When do I get paid?
MANAGER
You get paid in two weeks.
LILLY
Two weeks? How much?
MANAGER
Minimum wage.
LILLY
How much is that?
MANAGER
$6.75 an hour.
LILLY
That's it? How am I gonna get any
new shirts or pants?
MANAGER
That's not my problem. What? You
quittin' on me?
LILLY
Forget this.
Lilly crumbles up her application and throws it in the trash
as she leaves the office and goes out to the car. The
manager is left standing not surprised that Lilly rejected
the job offer.
CUT TO:
I/E. VIPER/MALIBU STREET
Lilly is driving along looking at places she could work when
she notices a flower shop help wanted sign. She decides to
pull over and see what the job is about.
CUT TO:
INT. FLOWER SHOP
Lilly enters the quaint flower shop that is adorned all
around with flowers in vases on counters and plants in
greenhouse style cabinets along the walls. Elderly, Southern
FLORIST is at the head counter watering some small plants
with a small spray bottle. There is dirt under her
fingernails. Lilly walks up to the counter.
LILLY
I was wondering about the "Help
Wanted" sign in the window.
FLORIST
Oh yes, we need somebody to re
plant some of the plants we receive
from shipping. No experience
necessary.
Lilly smiles at the fact that she doesn't need experience.
LILLY
Oh, OK. How is that done?
FLORIST
We take the plant out of the dirt
they're shipped in and put it into
our own special fast-growing soil.
LILLY
Well, that sounds OK. Do you need
someone with a bachelor's degree?
FLORIST
Oh heavens no, we don't need
anybody that advanced, just someone
willing to get their hands dirty.
Lilly gets concerned at the florist's mention of "dirty."
Being rich didn't give Lilly the opportunity to get her hands
dirty.
LILLY
Dirty? I'd have to get my hands
dirty?
FLORIST
Why yes. How else would you put
the plants in the dirt?
LILLY
What if I were to put on gloves or
something? I have a nice pair of
leather ones at home.
FLORIST
Oh gloves just won't do. Plants
need a caring, personal touch.
Gloves are just too impersonal.
Plants can sense if you care or
not, you know?
LILLY
They can't "sense" anything,
they're not alive!
The florist's patience has now run thin with Lilly's extreme
reluctance to get dirty. Her temperament goes from a sweet,
caring grandmother to a hard-nosed, strict disciplinarian.
FLORIST
I'm afraid that you may not be a
good fit here. You have to be
willing to get your hands dirty to
reap rewards.
Lilly frowns at another disappointment. She thanks the
florist and leaves the shop.
CUT TO:
EXT. FLOWER SHOP
As Lilly is walking to the Viper, Irving calls her.
IRVING
How's the job search going?
LILLY
Terrible, daddy! They want me to
wear an ugly uniform at the post
office. They want me to get my
hands dirty at the flower shop.
Are there any jobs that I can dress
nice and not get dirty?
IRVING
Lilac, listen. I know you want a
nice cushy job somewhere, but
that's just not going to happen
with some phone call. You're going
to have to start from the bottom
and work, and I mean WORK, your way
up.
LILLY
But daddy...
Irving's voice gets more stern trying to get his message
across to Lilly.
IRVING
No butts, Lilly, just get out there
and get a job. Love you, bye.
Irving hangs up as Lilly gets in her car.
INT. VIPER - CONTINUOUS
Lilly is driving along the Malibu streets when she gets a
phone call from Marcie.
MARCIE
So how's the job hunt going?
LILLY
These jobs are soo not right for
me.
MARCIE
Well, a secretary position opened
up here at work, you interested?
LILLY
How much does it pay?
MARCIE
(chuckling)
Enough for you to keep going to the
mall.
LILLY
(laughing)
That's good enough for me, I'll be
right over.
Lilly makes headway toward United Consulting where Marcie
works as one of the secretaries.
CUT TO:
INT. UNITED CONSULTING - DAY
Lilly drives over to United Consulting, which does an
Information Technology consulting across the state of
California. Lilly parks her car in the parking garage and
walks toward the offices. When she arrives, she is greeted
by MARCIE, a 20 year-old size 3 brunette.
LILLY
Hey, Marse.
MARCIE
Hey, Lil'. Let me introduce you to
my boss, Mr. Harris.
Marcie and Lilly walk along a corridor of cubicles filled
with consultants talking on phones, typing up reports, and
other office work. The two women head toward a mahogany
double-door that bears a name plate, "BERNARD HARRIS, CEO."
Marcie knocks on the door and is summoned in by Mr. Harris.
INT. UNITED CONSULTING, BERNARD HARRIS' OFFICE - CONTINUOUS
Harris' office has only one wall, the other three sides are
floor-to-ceiling windows.
Mr. Harris, an African-American in his 40's, is sitting at
his desk talking on the phone to a client. He looks up to
see Marcie and Lilly standing before him and hangs up his
phone.
MARCIE
Mr. Harris, this is the friend I've
been telling you about, Lilly
Stephenson.
Marcie gestures toward Lilly, who is given the once over by
Mr. Harris. Lilly holds out her hand to shake with Mr.
Harris who returns the favor.
MR. HARRIS
Ah, Lilly Stephenson. I've heard
so much about you. So you're
looking for a job?
LILLY
Yeah, daddy wants me to find a job
or I'm out the house.
MR. HARRIS
Well, think I can help. As Marcie
told you, we have an opening for a
secretary. You'll be faxing pages
to our clients, making photo
copies, and other office work.
Think you can handle that?
LILLY
Yeah, I think so.
MR. HARRIS
OK. Well, Marcie can you help
Lilly fill out the paper work and
show her the ropes?
MARCIE
Yes, sir.
Marcie takes Lilly to fill out paperwork.
CUT TO:
INT. UNITED CONSULTING, MARCIE'S DESK - DAY
Lilly is filling out the paper work at Marcie's desk.
MARCIE
You know how to work the fax and
copy machines, right?
LILLY
Uh, sure, how hard could it be?
MARCIE
OK, let me show you to your desk.
Lilly is taken to her new cubicle replete with phone and
computer. Marcie leaves Lilly to sort through her new
surroundings.
CUT TO:
INT. UNITED CONSULTING, LILLY'S CUBICLE - LATER
Lilly is playing around on the computer when she gets a phone
call from Mr. Harris.
LILLY
Um, United Consultants, how may I
help you?
MR. HARRIS
Lilly, this is Mr. Harris, can you
come into my office? I need you to
fax some pages to a client.
LILLY
Sure, I'll be right over.
Lilly hangs up the phone and walks over to Mr. Harris'
office.
CUT TO:
INT. UNITED CONSULTING, BERNARD HARRIS' OFFICE
Lilly goes into Mr. Harris' office to get the papers to fax.
MR. HARRIS
Lilly, these need to be faxed
before the end of the day. The
client needs these in order to get
their users trained on the new
systems we installed. Can you do
it?
Lilly nods and heads over to the fax machine in the copy
room.
CUT TO:
INT. UNITED CONSULTING, COPY ROOM - DAY
Lilly is in the copy room with the packet of papers to be
faxed in hand. She walks over to the fax machine and
prepares page one of the packet for faxing. She dials the
number, but keeps getting an error tone. She tries again
with the same result. While standing there trying to figure
out what's wrong, a CONSULTANT comes in to make photocopies
and notices Lilly having some trouble, so he walks over.
CONSULTANT
Did you press 9 to get an outside
line?
LILLY
Huh?
CONSULTANT
You have to press 9 before dialing
the number so you can go outside of
the office.
LILLY
Oh, OK. Thanks.
The consultant gives Lilly a nod and walks over to the copy
machine to make his copies. Lilly presses 9 as instructed
and dials the rest of the numbers to the client's fax number.
The first page of the packet slides through the machine.
Lilly is perplexed. She looks over to the consultant for
more help.
LILLY
Um, why is the paper coming back
out? I sent the fax.
The consultant is not amused by Lilly's naivete and is
getting annoyed. He stops his photocopying to answer the
question.
CONSULTANT
It's supposed to come back out.
You sent a copy over to the client.
LILLY
Oh.
The consultant returns to photocopying as Lilly puts up the
second page. The second page goes through smoothly and Lilly
is feeling confident that she finally got this blasted thing
to work.
She finishes faxing the packet and returns the packet to Mr.
Harris' office. Lilly then decides to visit Marcie.
CUT TO:
INT. UNITED CONSULTING, MARCIE'S CUBICLE
LILLY
Hey Marse, how're things going?
MARCIE
Can't talk now, Lil'. I gotta
collect these invoices then make
photocopies for the Accounts
Receivable department.
LILLY
Oh. Can I help?
MARCIE
Will you? Oh thank you!
Lilly helps Marcie gather the invoices and the two walk
together to the copy room.
CUT TO:
INT. UNITED CONSULTING, COPY ROOM
Lilly and Marcie are putting together the first batch of
invoices to be copied.
MARCIE
Oh, I just remembered. I need to
go downstairs and get some more
invoices. Can you get started on
these until I get back?
LILLY
Sure.
Marcie leaves Lilly to the seemingly easy task of making
photocopies. Lilly puts the pages in the feeder and looks at
the copy machine console in confusion. The consultant walks
back into the copy room just in time to see Lilly's confused
look at the copy machine. He immediately leaves, not wanting
to take part in another annoying session with her. Lilly
presses some buttons on the console and watches as the
invoices get scooped up and copied. Lilly gathers the new
copies and puts them on the table behind her. After a few
seconds, the copied pages are still coming out.
Lilly is confused, she thinks that all the pages that need to
be copied were. The pages keep coming and coming.
LILLY
(flustered)
What's going on here? How do I
stop this thing?
Marcie comes back and sees paper strewn all over the floor.
She is in utter shock. Lilly looks over and sees Marcie.
LILLY
Marcie, stop this crazy thing!
Marcie rushes over to the copy machine, reaches behind it and
unplugs it.
MARCIE
What the hell happened?
LILLY
I dunno, I just put the papers in
the little feeding thing and
pressed the copy button.
Marcie looks at the console and sees that someone put in 300
copies to be made.
MARCIE
Apparently you also pressed for 300
copies to be made. I thought you
knew how to work the copy machine?
Lilly is flustered at this point and she can't handle the
pressure that is mounting on her now.
LILLY
Well, I saw daddy do it a few
times. I saw him stand up at the
machine and pressed a button. I
thought, "How hard could it be?"
MARCIE
Well, it's a lot harder than you
think. Come on, let's clean this
up before Mr. Harris sees this.
Lilly and Marcie begin piling paper upon paper into the
recycle bins when Mr. Harris comes in to see the fiasco.
MR. HARRIS
What the...
Marcie turns and sees Mr. Harris.
MARCIE
It's my fault, sir. I left the
machine making copies. I...
Lilly looks over at her friend taking the fall for her and
she cannot stand idly by. Marcie has been there for Lilly
ever since she can remember. It was Marcie who helped Lilly
deal with the loss of her mother. Rachel, Lilly's mom, died
when Lilly was 10. Rachel was rushing home from work as a
paralegal when she was sideswiped by an SUV, killing her
instantly. While Irving was dealing with the death in his
own way, Marcie was there to take Lilly's mind off of it.
Lilly had to do something to help her best friend.
LILLY
It's not her fault, Mr. Harris.
It's mine.
MR. HARRIS
It doesn't matter whose fault it
is, just get this cleaned up.
LILLY
Yes sir.
Lilly and Marcie clean up the rest of the papers and toss
them in the recycle bin.
LILLY
Marcie, I'm so sorry.
MARCIE
(stern)
Forget about it, mistakes happen.
But I think I'll make the copies
myself.
LILLY
Oh...OK.
Lilly leaves the copy room dejected. She let her best friend
down. Marcie finishes her copies and heads back to her desk.
INT. UNITED CONSULTING, LILLY'S CUBICLE
Lilly is back in her cubicle tapping the mouse button and
looking as if she were staring into space. The phone rings
and Lilly picks it up. A CLIENT is on the other line.
LILLY
(depressed)
Hello, United Consulting. How may
I help you?
CLIENT
Yes, I need to speak with the HR
Director.
LILLY
Ok, if you can just hold on one
second, I'll transfer...
Another call comes in.
LILLY
Hello, United Consulting. How may
I help you?
CLIENT #2
Yes, um, can I speak with Richard
Davis?
LILLY
Um, I think he works in the
Networking department. Hold on,
I'll transfer...
Another call comes in. Then another, and another. Lilly is
getting flustered again. She cannot deal with the incoming
calls. She begins shouting at the clients on the phone which
beckons Mr. Harris, who was walking back to his office.
MR. HARRIS
Lilly, what are you doing? You
can't talk to our clients like
that.
LILLY
Sorry, I just...didn't think it'd
be this hard.
Marcie is listening in on the conversation from her cubicle.
MR. HARRIS
Hmm. Listen, did you fax those
papers?
LILLY
Yeah, I did.
MR. HARRIS
Well, my client just called and
told me he didn't get the faxes.
LILLY
Huh? I faxed them earlier today.
MR. HARRIS
Did you fax them correctly? Show
me how you faxed them.
Lilly and Mr. Harris walked over to the fax machine. Marcie
is not too far behind.
CUT TO:
INT. UNITED CONSULTING, COPY ROOM
Lilly proceeds to show Mr. Harris how she faxed the pages.
MR. HARRIS
I see now. You faxed them
incorrectly. You had the pages
turned the wrong way.
LILLY
Oh, I didn't know it had to be
turned a certain way.
Mr. Harris looks down at the fax machine frustrated at
Lilly's incompetence.
MR. HARRIS
Lilly, I don't think you are a good
fit here. We need someone who can
hit the ground running and keep us
organized. I'm sorry, I'm gonna
have to let you go.
LILLY
Oh please, Mr. Harris, give me
another chance, I promise I will do
better.
MR. HARRIS
I'm sorry Lilly.
Marcie looks on as her best friend is let go. She cannot
help her friend now.
Marcie has to pay the rent and this job pays well. Lilly
trudges back to her desk, gathers her things and leaves.
CUT TO:
INT. VIPER - DAY
Lilly is driving away from United Consulting in utter
despair. Lilly has not been able to get and keep a job.
Lilly decides to stop by Starbucks for a Vanilla Frappucino,
her favorite drink.
CUT TO:
EXT. STARBUCKS PARKING LOT - DAY
While going to Starbucks, Lilly is approached by a smooth
talking, stylishly dressed guy named RICKY.
RICKY
Hey, you interested in making some
money?
LILLY
Um, do I know you?
RICKY
Yeah, I'm Ricky. I'm the man that
can make you more money than you or
I can ever dream of.
Lilly, upon hearing the word money, perks up and begins to
listen more intently to Ricky's proposal. Lilly has flashes
of using her own money to buy Gucci bags and Prada belts.
LILLY
What do I have to do?
RICKY
All you have to do is go to this
address.
Ricky writes down an address on a piece of paper and gives it
to Lilly.
LILLY
Wow! That's it? Just go to this
address. What I gotta do?
RICKY
All the details will be worked out
with my John, er, client when you
get there. Just dress like you're
going to a party.
LILLY
OK, thanks. When do I need to be
there?
RICKY
Anytime after seven o'clock
tonight.
LILLY
Isn't that kind of late?
RICKY
You want this job or not? Quit
asking questions. You'll know what
you need to know when you get
there.
Lilly is taken aback, but thanks Ricky and leaves for home.
CUT TO:
INT. STEPHENSON HOUSE, DEN - EVENING
Lilly has come home and is running in to tell her father the
good news. Irving is watching the evening news.
LILLY
Daddy, I got a job, and this one
looks to be a keeper!
IRVING
I'm proud of you, Lilac. What job
is it?
LILLY
I dunno, but Ricky told me that all
the details will be worked out when
I get to work tonight.
IRVING
Ricky? Hmm, I dunno about this.
LILLY
Daddy, you said to get a job, I got
one.
IRVING
But I also told you you need to
keep one.
LILLY
Yeah, and I think this is a job I
can keep.
Irving is puzzled at this, but looks at her daughter's
radiant smile and decides to let it go.
IRVING
OK dear. Well, please be careful,
OK?
LILLY
Yes, daddy, I will.
Lilly leaves her father and goes upstairs to call Marcie.
CUT TO:
INT. STEPHENSON HOUSE, LILLY'S BEDROOM - NIGHT
Lilly is lying in bed and talking to Marcie.
MARCIE
Look, I'm sorry about today. I
hope you understand.
LILLY
Yeah I do. I was able to find
another job.
MARCIE
Really? How'd that happen?
Lilly recounts the story of how she met Ricky. Marcie gives
her two cents on the issue.
LILLY
Oh geez Marcie, daddy told me the
same thing. I'll be OK. Why are
you two treating me like a child.
MARCIE
Because we care about you.
LILLY
I know. I just wish you guys would
treat me like a mature adult.
MARCIE
Well, in order to be treated like
an adult, you gotta act like one.
LILLY
I guess.
Lilly and Marcie say their goodbyes and Lilly gets ready to
go to the address. Lilly dresses in one of the outfits she
recently bought and heads to the address on the paper.
CUT TO:
I/E. VIPER/MALIBU STREET - NIGHT
Lilly is driving along a dark, secluded street toward a
sleazy motel.
LILLY
I hope that isn't the place.
Lilly slows down, looks down at the written address and
confirms that it is the motel.
LILLY
Damn.
Lilly parks her Viper and gets out.
EXT. SLEAZY MOTEL - CONTINUOUS
Lilly is walking along the pavement toward hotel room number
120. She knocks on the door and is greeted by a balding,
middle-aged man named Frank. Frank looks over Lilly and
really likes what he sees.
FRANK
Oh yeah, you'll do just fine. You
the girl Ricky sent, right?
LILLY
Yeah. I'm, I'm Lilly.
FRANK
Well, come in, Maid Marian.
Lilly walks into the room amidst much trepidation. She is
frightened of the man and wonders what will happen.
INT. MOTEL ROOM - CONTINUOUS
The motel room is dark, with only a table lamp lighting the
room. Lilly puts her purse down on the bed as Frank looks at
her from behind.
FRANK
So, um, Lilly is it? How much?
Lilly gives the man a puzzled look. She pauses and thinking
she doesn't want to make a bad impression on her first day
replies
LILLY
Whatever you want to give me is
fine.
Frank pulls out a pair of handcuffs which startles Lilly.
LILLY
Wh...what Are you doing with th...
Before Lilly could complete her question, she is turned
around and handcuffed.
FRANK
I'm Officer Frank Gaines and you're
under arrest for prostitution.
Lilly now screams in disbelief.
LILLY
WHAT! I'm not a prostitute!
FRANK
Tell it to the judge.
Frank then reads Lilly her rights and is ushered out to an
unmarked car and is driven to the police station.
CUT TO:
INT. POLICE STATION - NIGHT
Lilly arrives at the police station and is stared at by
Malibu's finest...miscreants.
MISCREANT #1
Hey, baby, what's a beautiful thing
like you doing here?
MISCREANT #2
Wow, you already in handcuffs,
that's my kinda girl.
Lilly shrugs off the "compliments" and leans closer to
Officer Gaines, who is now garnishing a evil smirk.
FRANK
Scared are we?
Lilly is led to get her fingerprints.
INT. POLICE STATION, FINGERPRINTING - CONTINUOUS
OFFICER #1 grabs Lilly's fingers and jams them in ink.
LILLY
You just ruined my nails! I just
had these re-done!
OFFICER #1
Tough shit, honey.
Lilly finishes getting her fingerprints taken and is led to
take her photograph.
INT. POLICE STATION, PHOTOS - CONTINUOUS
Lilly smiles because she loves taking pictures.
LILLY
My right side is my best side.
OFFICER #2
I really don't care, just turn when
I tell ya, OK?
Lilly complies sullenly and turns to her left. Lilly is then
taken to inventory where her possessions are taken.
INT. POLICE STATION, INVENTORY - CONTINUOUS
Lilly is confused and scared when she sees OFFICER #4 taking
her purse and emptying it.
LILLY
What are you doing?
OFFICER #4
You don't think you get to keep
your toys, do you?
Lilly starts to shed tears as she is led to a holding cell
that contains females of all illegal varieties.
INT. POLICE STATION, HOLDING CELL - CONTINUOUS
The cell doors close behind Lilly, who is really scared now
looking at the people she is sharing space with. She turns
around and shouts at the police officers.
LILLY
You can't do this to me! I'm Lilly
Stephenson! My father knows the
district judge and he will have all
your jobs!
The cops who bothered to listen to Lilly's rant, pretend like
they didn't. While this is going on a broad woman with dirty
brown hair wearing denim walks up behind Lilly. Lilly quiets
down as she senses the woman behind her. Lilly slowly turns
around and sees BIG BERTHA in all her rugged, dirty glory.
BIG BERTHA
You sure do smell pretty.
Lilly smiles at the compliment and eases up a bit.
LILLY
Um, it's the moisturizer I use. I
apply it not only to my face,
but...
BIG BERTHA
I don't give a damn about no moist
whatever you call it. I just want
to kiss those purty little lips of
yours and make you my girlfriend.
Lilly tenses right back up as the other occupants of the cell
are looking on with devious interest seeing Lilly sweat more
than a race horse after running the Kentucky Derby. Big
Bertha moves in close to Lilly who is looking like she is
about to soil herself. The cell doors open, which elates
Lilly to no end. An officer takes Lilly out of the holding
cell, much to the dismay of Big Bertha who is dejected that
her new girlfriend is now gone.
LILLY
Thank you, thank you!
Lilly hugs the police officer, who immediately shoves her
off.
OFFICER #3
Ok, Ok, Ms. Stephenson, you can let
go now. Lt. Williams says that if
you can give a positive description
of Ricky, you can go.
LILLY
Oh ok.
Lilly walks over to LT. WILLIAMS' office which is separated
from the rest of the station by glass windows.
INT. POLICE STATION, LT. WILLIAMS OFFICE - CONTINUOUS
Lilly is seated across from a husky, yet muscular man in his
40's. Lilly is still nervous.
LT. WILLIAMS
So Lilly, how did you get involved
with Ricky?
Lilly recounted how she met Ricky at Starbucks and how she
got the address to go to the motel. Lt. Williams presses an
intercom button.
LT. WILLIAMS
Gary, can you come in?
Officer Gary Trent, a sketch artist comes in the office.
LT. WILLIAMS
Can you tell Officer Trent what
Ricky looks like?
LILLY
Sure.
Lilly describes Ricky to Officer Trent who sketches out
Lilly's every word. Officer Trent holds up the finished
sketch to Lilly who gives her approval.
LT. WILLIAMS
Ok, Lilly. With this description,
we should be able to nab the guy.
However, if you've given us any
wrong information, we'll get you.
Lilly is frightened by the threat and tries to assure Lt.
Williams she gave accurate information.
LILLY
I gave you all I know, ok?
LT. WILLIAMS
Ok, well, you can go home now.
Lilly is then taken to a patrol car by Frank and driven back
to the motel to get her car.
CUT TO:
EXT. SLEAZY HOTEL - NIGHT
Frank stops the car and Lilly gets out.
FRANK
You stay out of trouble.
LILLY
Yes, sir.
Lilly gets in the Viper and looks at the sleazy motel.
LILLY
I do not want to see this place
ever again.
Lilly spins out and hightails it out of there.
CUT TO:
I/E. VIPER/MALIBU STREET
On the way home, Lilly looks out the car window and sees
prostitutes walking around.
LILLY
Wow, I wonder what these girls
really go through. I wonder if
it's as dangerous as it looks.
Lilly thinks back to Ricky's promise of money.
LILLY
I don't think any amount of money
could make me do that.
Lilly drives the rest of the way home with the radio on
thinking about her day and her time in jail.
CUT TO:
EXT. STEPHENSON HOUSE
Lilly is fumbling with her keys trying to open the door, but
the door opens from the inside and Lilly looks up to see an
impatient and angered Irving.
IRVING
Do you know what time it is?
LILLY
Do you know where I've been?
Irving gives a confused look as Lilly walks in the door and
goes to the den to put down her purse.
INT. STEPHENSON HOUSE, DEN - CONTINUOUS
Lilly sits down on the Corinthian leather couch and takes
deep breaths. She then sits Irving down and recounts for him
what happened to her at the police station. Irving listens
on in shock.
LILLY
Can I go to bed now, I'm really
tired.
IRVING
Sure.
Lilly immediately gets up and goes upstairs to bed.
CUT TO:
INT. STEPHENSON HOUSE, DINING ROOM - DAY
The next morning, Lilly comes down the stairs and sees her
father at the table.
IRVING
You ok?
Lilly only musters a nod. Lilly walks over to the fridge to
get a glass of orange juice. She comes back to the table and
pours out some juice. Irving picks up his glass, and
realizing it's empty, reaches for the carton, which is also
empty. Before he even looks up, Lilly pushes her full glass
of orange juice toward her father. Irving looks up and
smiles.
IRVING
Thank you. You know, after last
night, you can take your time in
finding a job.
LILLY
Nah, last night I learned that I
can't be a spoiled, greedy brat.
IRVING
Don't be so hard on yourself.
Lilac, look, when your mother died,
I didn't know what to do. I coped
the best I could, but I didn't know
how to help you cope.
Lilly is listening intently, not ignoring her father's words
anymore.
IRVING
I thought by buying you things, it
would help you, but it didn't. You
became more dependent instead of
more independent. I now realize
that I should've just kept doing
what I've been doing. I stopped
being a father and became a bank.
I just want to be a father again.
Lilly takes in what her father said.
LILLY
You are a father to me. I guess I
got a bit selfish when you started
buying me stuff.
Lilly and Irving look at each other, Lilly gets up and hugs
her father. This time, it's no act.
LILLY
I love you daddy.
IRVING
I love you too, Lilly.
LILLY
I promise I'll get a job and make
you proud of me.
IRVING
I know Lilac, I know. Listen, have
you actually tried going to the
mall to look for a job?
LILLY
Hmm, nah. Guess I should, huh?
Irving gives a smile.
IRVING
It's worth a shot.
Lilly leaves to her bedroom to get dressed.
CUT TO:
INT. STEPHENSON HOUSE, LILLY'S BEDROOM
Lilly comes to her bedroom, gets her purse and sits down at
her desk. She grabs the scissors off the desk and proceeds
to cut four of her remaining five credit cards.
LILLY
Like daddy said, I won't be needing
these anymore.
The only card remaining is the Visa platinum. She picks it
up and is about to cut it when she stops. She puts the card
back in the purse, smiling.
LILLY
For emergencies.
Lilly puts her purse down and looks at her clothes on the
floor.
LILLY
I need to toss those clothes.
Lilly goes and gets some garbage bags and comes back. She
begins putting the clothes on the floor into the bags.
DISSOLVE TO:
INT. STEPHENSON HOUSE, LILLY'S BEDROOM - LATER
After she is done putting the clothes in bags, she drags them
down to the garage. Irving looks out the his office door
puzzled. While Lilly is packing the bags into the Navigator,
one of her press-on nails break off, she looks at the broken
nail for a moment, then continues putting the bags into the
vehicle. Lilly gets in and drives off.
EXT. SALVATION ARMY PARKING LOT
Lilly arrives at the Salvation Army amid a group of
onlookers. She takes out the bags and heads inside.
INT. SALVATION ARMY - CONTINUOUS
Lilly drags the bags inside and drops them off at the front
counter.
LILLY
Here, you go.
Lilly leaves and drives to the mall to look for jobs.
CUT TO:
INT. MALL
Lilly is in the mall and tries to look for a job at Neiman
Marcus.
INT. MALL, NEIMAN MARCUS - CONTINUOUS
Lilly walks in and sees the saleswoman who sold her the Prada
belt. The saleswoman scampers over to earn another hefty
commission.
SALESWOMAN
Hey there! How can I help you
today? Can I interest you in the
DKNY Tees?
LILLY
I'm not here to shop. I'm here to
look for a job.
The saleswoman, thinking this a sign of Lilly having no
money, turns lukewarm.
SALESWOMAN
Oh, well, there are no openings
here.
LILLY
Oh, ok, well thanks.
Lilly leaves the store and heads over to Nine West. She gets
the same response there: no job.
Lilly walks through the mall depressed that her favorite
stores are not hiring. She walks to the food court to see
the March of Dimes counter at the Food Court.
INT. MALL, MARCH OF DIMES COUNTER
The solicitor groans when she sees her. Lilly comes up to
her and takes out a $20 bill.
SOLICITOR
Look, I still don't have change for
$20
LILLY
I know.
Lilly drops the $20 in the donation bin and walks away,
leaving the solicitor in complete smiling shock. Lilly walks
along store windows when she notices a hiring sign in a store
window. She looks up to see the store is J.C. Penney. Lilly
is having a hard time deciding whether she should go in. She
just can't bring herself to go in and walks off. She walks
slowly and contemplatively and decides to come back. Lilly
looks at the sign again, takes a deep breath, and walks in.
CUT TO:
INT. MALL, J.C. PENNEY - DAY
Text comes up: "One week later..."
Irving is in J.C. Penney looking to buy something nice for
Lilly. Irving walks up to a clothing rack full of beautiful
dresses.
IRVING
(talking to himself)
Which one of these dresses would
she like?
A voice from behind Irving asks him something.
VOICE
Welcome to J.C. Penney, may I help
you find something today.
Irving ignores the voice, so the voice asks again and taps
Irving on the shoulder.
VOICE
May I help you?
Irving turns around and sees Lilly in her J.C. Penney
uniform. Irving is in shock. He gives a proud smile and
proceeds to act as if Lilly is just another attendant.
IRVING
I'm looking for something nice for
my daughter. She's around your age
and beautiful just like you. Any
suggestions?
Lilly blushes shyly then points to some dresses on the rack.
LILLY
Yes, we have some beautiful dresses
right over here.
Lilly helps Irving pick out dresses.
FADE OUT.
