This is a vignette from my short script, "Daddy's Girl."
FADE IN:
INT. BREAKFAST TABLE - DAY, MORNING
We enter the breakfast table, on a medium shot, adjoining the
kitchen to see LILLY STEPHENSON eating breakfast with her
father, IRVING. LILLY finishes her breakfast and puts her
dishes on top of the mound of already dirty dishes in the
sink. She walks over to the fridge to get something to
drink. Lilly walks back to the table with the carton of
juice and her glass and sits down with her drink.
IRVING
When are you gonna wash the dishes?
LILLY
The dishwasher is broken, remember?
You called the repairman yesterday.
IRVING
You can wash the dishes by hand, ya
know?
LILLY
With all that icky stuff in there?
Uh...no!
IRVING
(sighing)
Lilly, when are you gonna grow up
and take some responsibility?
LILLY
I brought in the mail yesterday,
didn't I?
IRVING
That's because you got a package
from Neiman Marcus.
Irving picks up the juice carton expecting to pour juice in
his glass only to find the carton empty.
IRVING
(exasperated)
This is what I'm talking about,
Lilly. It's these type of things
that's made me come to a decision.
Lilly looks at her father, and sensing something is wrong,
begins to put on a "baby girl" act.
LILLY
(puzzled)
What decision, daddy?
IRVING
I've decided that you need to move
out and be on your own.
LILLY
M...move out on my own? Why?
Irving gets up from the table and paces around, trying to
find the right words.
IRVING
I want you to be more mature. You
don't wash the dishes. You don't
take out the garbage. Hell, you
don't even clean your room!
Shocked with the sudden news, Lilly becomes nervous and
starts to put her act into overdrive.
LILLY
Daddy, I don't wanna move out! I
thought I was your little princess?
Sensing her act, Irving is resilient in his decision. We
dial into his face as he looks at Lilly with a sly grin. His
face changes to seriousness as he gets the morning paper and
slams it on the table in front of Lilly.
IRVING
Start looking for a job.
Irving then leaves the breakfast area to let Lilly look for a
job. Lilly slinks back in her chair in a huff, crossing her
arms, obviously disappointed that her act no longer works on
her father. She then gets up and goes to her room. Later,
Irving comes back to the breakfast table and sees the
newspaper still there. He shakes his head in disappointment
and he picks it up and leaves.
CUT TO:
INT. LILLY'S BEDROOM BED - SAME DAY
We are in Lilly's room, and like Irving has said, it hasn't
been cleaned. Lilly is lying on her bed talking to one of
her friends on the phone.
LILLY
Can you believe that, Marcy? He
wants me to start looking for a
job! Me! Who does he think I am?
Irving knocks on the door and comes in without being
acknowledged by Lilly. Irving drops the newspaper on her
desk which garners no attention from Lilly.
LILLY
(talking to Marcy)
Why would I work? I have
everything I could ever want.
Irving looks on in disbelief after what Lilly just said.
IRVING
Lilly, have you started looking for
a job?
Lilly ignores her father and continues to talk on the phone.
Seeing this, we dial in to the action as Irving gets Lilly's
purse and takes out her gold card which has Irving's name on
it. Irving gets a pair of scissors off Lilly's desk and
moves it and the card in front of Lilly. Irving cuts the
card in front of Lilly who hangs up the phone and looks in
shock.
IRVING
(said as he is cutting the
card)
You won't be needing this anymore.
LILLY
(in shock)
DADDY!! How can you do that?
IRVING
I told you to start looking for a
job. Have you done that?
LILLY
You were serious about that?
Irving takes another credit card out of Lilly's purse and
begins to repeat the process. Lilly puts up her hand too
stop her father.
LILLY
OK, OK! You're serious.
Lilly begins to realize that this situation is not a joke and
gets despondent. Irving puts down the card and scissors.
She looks down at the cut up card. Irving places his hand
under Lilly's chin and raises her face.
IRVING
Lilly, look, ever since your mother
died, I wanted to give you the best
the world had to offer. I now
realize that I should've just kept
doing what I've been doing. I
stopped being a father and became a
bank. I just want to be a father
again.
LILLY
(pauses)
You are a father to me. I guess I
got a bit selfish when you started
buying me stuff.
Lilly and Irving look at each other, Lilly gets up and hugs
her father.
LILLY
I love you dad.
IRVING
I love you too, Lilly.
Irving leaves Lilly's bedroom and goes to his room. Lilly
sees the newspaper on her desk and begins to look through the
classified ads circling possible jobs.
CUT TO:
INT. CLOTHING WORLD CLOTHING STORE - DAY
Text comes up: "One month later..."
Irving is in a clothing store looking to buy something nice
for Lilly. Irving walks up to a clothing rack full of
beautiful dresses.
IRVING
(talking to himself)
Which one of these dresses would my
daughter like? So many to choose
from.
A voice from behind (Lilly) Irving asks him something.
LILLY
Welcome to Clothing World, may I
help you find something today.
Irving ignores the voice, so Lilly asks again and taps Irving
on the shoulder.
LILLY
May I help you?
Irving turns around and sees Lilly in her Clothing World
uniform. Irving is in shock. He gives a proud, small, smile
and proceeds to act as if Lilly is another attendant.
IRVING
I'm looking for something nice for
my daughter. She's around your age
and beautiful just like you. Any
suggestions?
Lilly blushes shyly then points to some dresses on the rack
LILLY
Yes, we have some beautiful dresses
right over here.
We dial out to show Lilly showing Irving some more dresses.
FADE TO BLACK.
