Francesco Stipa leaves Italy in 1905 in search of a better life in America. The dream may have seemed attainable, but hardship and catastrophe drive him back to the old country.
His son, Giovanni, takes up the torch to return to America, but the Great Depression hits. To earn money, Giovanni enlists in the Italian Navy. When his tour of duty is almost over, he is forced into World War II against his will and endures the horrors of naval warfare until Italy surrenders on September 8, 1943.
Giovanni is now faced with a difficult choice: fight with Germany, which will certainly result in death, or spend the remainder of the war in a Nazi concentration camp. With only his father’s dream to hold onto, Giovanni’s chances of survival are bleak.
