Personal and Travel Safety for the Single Woman
“On February 17, 1991, about 9 p.m., a flight attendant rode the elevator to the third floor of a Detroit airport hotel. The small brunette said good-night to a friend also on layover, pulled her luggage cart around a corner and walked down a long hall, past an alcove with a noisy ice machine, to Room 354. Romulus police detectives speculate she turned to open the door with a key card and her killer stepped out of a stairwell then pushed her into the room. Defensive cuts on her hands showed she tried to fend him off, but he overpowered her, gagged her and tied her hands with rope. The murderer was caught and convicted in 2004.” (Websleuths.com)
This tragic and horrifying event of a flight attendant brutally murdered in her hotel room happened the month after I started training to be a flight attendant. I omitted the graphic and tragic details of the original coverage from the Detroit newspaper. Soon after the crime occurred, our pilots were instructed to escort the attendants to their room and then the following would take place:
• The pilots would stand out in the hall.
• The flight attendants would go to their rooms, open their doors, and brace them wide open with their luggage.
• They would go into the bathroom and make sure the shower curtain was pulled back and check behind the door.
• They would open all closet doors, and look inside.
• They would check behind long curtains and under the bed.
• The pilots were to stay in the hall until all of the flight attendants gave the ok, closed and locked the door.
• On rare occasions the when the crew was not all on the same floor; some captains had us write down their room number ‘just in case’ we needed them. We were to call the captain as soon as we got to our room. I received a terse phone call once for forgetting to call a captain.
Even with all these safety procedures, I was on a layover of an international trip about a year later; several flight attendants went shopping in a town square. The shopping area was described as a very open, beautiful, busy tourist area. One of our crew stopped off to buy something and told the others she’d catch up with them so they did not have to wait on her. As she came out of the store, she walked passed an alley and was grabbed from behind and pulled into it. Although people were around, her purse was stolen and she was groped roughly and choked by a couple of men as they proceeded to drag her down the alley. A scream from a witness saved her from worse. She was relatively unhurt but it goes to show that you can never be too safe or paranoid. It was broad daylight, people were around and she was with a group.
As a single woman who travels a lot, I have seen women not paying attention to their surroundings, being distracted by technology, having too many things to carry, the list goes on. Based on the experiences I have had as a flight attendant I put together some do’s and don’ts for travelling alone.
