A sea where the death rate averages, during the crab seasons, nearly one fisherman per week and an injury rate of nearly 100% due to the severe weather conditions of frigid gales, rogue waves, ice formations on and around the boat and the danger on a deck that is constantly rolling with the fury of the Bering Sea. There was organized confusion on deck. Scotty and Makya grabbed one of the victims from the raft, who was only clad in a T-shirt and long johns, and quickly carried him into the galley and laid him on the floor. Scotty grabbed some warm, dry blankets and placed them over the first victim. Makya checked for vital signs, but there were none, and he began administering CPR.
Makya saw that the man could be no older then thirty and that his skin wasturning blue.The man’s eyes were staring into space, his face was as white as a pillowcase, with a lifeless look. Makya closed the eyelids and continued with the CPR.
In a matter of a couple of minutes, Shane and Elliot brought the secondcrew member into the galley and stretched the victim out on the floor. This victim had on only long johns. Makya took a double take as he looked at the second victim. He noticed it was a young lady no more than twenty-two or twenty-five years of age. Her eyes were closed as if she was in a deep sleep. She did not display any vital signs either. Elliot went and grabbed some blankets while Shane began doing CPR.
Lenny went to the wheelhouse and gave the skipper the news. The skipperimmediately notified other rescue vessels that they have retrieved two from the second raft but that neither exhibited any signs of life and that CPR was being performed at this time.
At this time, the two Coast Guard cutters were now on the scene alongwith the C-130 Coast Guard aircraft and a Jayhawk helicopter. The search continued, and after two hours of performing CPR, Skipper Moran requestedall CPRs to cease since all attempts to revive the victims were unsuccessful.
