The magic is working.  Then bad things start to happen. Why? Is the statue running out of magic?  When the ranch owner ends up in the hospital, Pippy knows the magic is almost gone. She needs more magic. But how? If she doesn’t get more soon, she could lose her horse. But even worse, the ranch owner could lose her life.   Excerpt Pippy glanced at her watch. It was 2:52. The sky was clear, with a million stars,but dark shadows gathered under the trees, black and scary-looking. Pippy stood as still as a stone. Only her eyes moved as she listened for signs of danger. Could there be wild animals, or something worse, in the shadows? Crickets chirped to one another. A gentle breeze rustled the leaves of the trees. Far off in the distance, a dog barked. Inky rubbed against Pippy’s ankle, making her jump. “You scared me,” Pippy whispered as she bent down to pet the cat. "Don't worry. There’s nothing out here that can hurt us.” Her shaking hands revealed she wasn’t sure of that. This was her own backyard where she played every day. It was a safe place. Wasn’t it? For a second she considered forgetting about the spell. Her nice warm bed was waiting for her. She could just turn around and go back inside. But maybe—just maybe—the spell would work. She had to try.

Asking her mom for one has gotten her nowhere, so she tries a magic spell. And she gets a horse! But not the kind she was expecting. Instead of a real horse, she finds a small glass horse figurine sitting on her windowsill on the morning of her birthday. Little Horse seems to have a bit of magic of his own and pretty soon Pippy has an opportunity to care for and ride a real horse on Mrs. Sunnyvale's ranch. When things turn complicated, Pippy turns to Little Horse's magic once again, but even he can't always make the world perfect.

Pippy is one of my favorite MG characters. She's got spunk and an independent streak but is very caring and thoughtful as well. Maybe It's Magic! is a sweet contemporary story with a touch of magical realism that will have young readers wishing for their own magical Little Horse!
