Allow me to introduce you to A Guide to Seldom Seen Animals, a whimsical take-off on children’s animal anthology picture books. All of the animals are make-believe and help explain in humorous ways some of the curious things that sometimes happen in everyday life.

Animals out of the woodwork

Have you ever wondered about those odd little things that seem to happen to you when you least expect them? You’re all dressed and ready to go and your father can’t find the keys to the family car. You’re coloring a picture, you put the crayon down, and it’s gone. Who breaks the points off pencils? Ties knots in shoelaces? Turns the water off so tight you can’t turn it on? Someone or something does.

Introducing the Seldom Seen Animals, a group of strange and funny critters few people have ever seen and most people have never heard of. For example, there is the One Legged Bromoloid who runs at the speed of sound. In fact, he runs so fast he is constantly running out of sock. He’s the one responsible when your mom puts a pair of socks in the laundry and only gets one back. Then there’s the Big Bellied Blip and her pal, the Podunk Moocher, who raid refrigerators. The Dirty Kemp wipes her messy hands on clean towels and walks on cereal. There’s the Overgrown Ditto, the Iron Fisted Wonk and many more.

Now for the very first time, many Seldom Seen Animals have been collected and presented in this guide. Look them over and read and learn about them. It may help explain some of those curious things that sometimes happen to you.

Excerpt

Have you ever wondered about those odd, little things that always seem to happen to you when you least expect it? You’re all dressed and ready to go and your father can’t find the keys to the family car. You’re coloring a picture, put the crayon down, and it’s gone. Who breaks the points off pencils? Ties knots in shoelaces? Turns the water off so hard you can’t turn it on? Someone or something does.
Some folks will tell you it’s the work of gremlins, little elf-like people like those who help Santa Claus at Christmas. But don’t you believe them. The truth is it’s the Seldom Seen Animals, a group of strange and funny animals few people have ever seen and most people have never heard of. Some are so small you can barely see them with a microscope. Others are so fast they can run at the speed of sound. And there are still others who only come out at night when you’re asleep.
Why these animals like to fool people, nobody knows. Professor H. I. Blinkalot, the man who discovered them and spent more than 25 years in their study, likes to think they are just playful; practical jokers whose idea of a good time is seeing the look of confusion on people’s faces. But for whatever reason they do it, they never, never hurt anybody. Now for the very first time many of them have been collected and presented in this guide. Look them over and read and learn about them. It may help explain some of those mysterious things that sometimes happen to you.

Professional Reviews

A creative and amusing book for children
Summary-

This short story provides a glimpse into the mischievous affairs of fictional unseen "animals." It even gives the reader insight on multiple species and how they affect everyday life. The use of pictures allow the imagination to stretch even further and captivate you to read on.

Review-

I really enjoyed the light humor in this fictional story because of how one can relate certain events to my everyday life. Bob Frey's book is one that I can recommend due to the entertaining segments on animals that supposedly hide the keys that your mother can't find, make noises in the car that drive your father crazy, and steal that one sock out of the dryer. Very funny and imaginative book!--Stacye Manlove, Amazon

This book has the answers
The title of this book caught my eye. The book talks about the different types of 'animals' that are responsible for many, many, many, many unexplainable happenings in and around the house.

I really like the fact that the author has found a way to identify the creatures and tell us who is responsible for what. Hopefully this will save many, many, many, many families around the world from squabbling about missing keys, candies, holes in socks.... No more listening to people getting out of breath and accusing each other for irritating mysteries in our lives. For this reason, it would be a good idea to have this translated in as many languages as possible. I can already imagen how funny it would be to hear what Ooey Gooey has done around the world. For example in Arabic, it would sound like: Laa Laa! Ooey Gooey!" (translation: No no! Ooey Goey!) or in Hindi: "Ooey Goey nay mayree kitab kharaab kar dee thi!" (translation: Ooey Gooey messed up my book!")

It is a noble act to save a family from painfully squabbling over missing car keys and this book deserves international recognition and applause!-Glasspen, Amazon

Very funny and creative book
The main idea is that `things' are done for which no one in the family can be blamed; the idea is sheer genius! This guide is very creative, the characters are funny and their names are self explanatory.

If your house is like my home, then I am sure you and others in the family get in trouble for things that no one seems to know who did them. Now the disappearance of socks, cookies from the cookie jar, stains on clothes, etc can be explained through this guide.

All-in-all, the book will make you laugh. It is highly recommended for children 9-12 years of age.--Bonnie Kao, Amazon
