The wind had picked up and now whipped the curtains against the wall. The lightning was increasing in frequency and was now followed by the rumble of thunder. The storm was getting closer, and soon would be over the reservation. Mark’s mother returned to the window and raised her arms to close it. He watched her stop and cock her head to the side as she leaned out, trying to focus on something.
“What on earth is…” she began to say.
She was cut off by a powerful flash that ripped the darkened sky and brought with it a deafening clap of thunder. She let out a shrill scream that sent a chill up Mark’s back. He first thought it was a reaction to the violent weather, but quickly realized something was quite wrong outside the house.
The boy sprung from his bed and pushed his mother aside. Leaning forward and out the window, he was able to make out a figure among the trees about two hundred feet from the house. When the clouds delivered another flash, he saw it clearly, standing among the branches, and looking directly at him.
It stood upright like a man, but had the fur and head of a leopard, golden and speckled with black spots. Eyes as bright and red as the taillights of a car stared through the boy and his mother, who dug her fingertips into the boy’s shoulders. Behind the creature, a long tail flapped in the storm wind and the beast seemed to be unaffected by the rising tempest.
As the lightning faded, Mark’s eyes could not adjust to the sudden darkness. When the next bolt lit up the night, he could see the animal was gone.
The panicked boy jumped back from the window, frantically slammed it shut, and bolted it. His mother stood there with her hand over her mouth, shaking.
“Mom, what was that?” he begged, but her fear had left her mute. “Mom?”
The frightened woman moved away from the window and almost fell onto the bed. She was breathing heavily as Mark took her hands and knelt in front of her.
“Mom, what was it?” he repeated.
The word barely managed to escape her terrified and trembling lips.
“Skinwalker.”
