When Emily turned to go, she bumped headlong into someone. She was chest level with a very tall man who was dressed in really loud clothes, and she looked up into the painted face of a clown. She recognized the outfit and was momentarily thrown off by the makeup, but then she realized it was the clown who had thrown her and the others out of the carnival the day before.
The clown towered over Emily and his bright clothes and painted smile did nothing to ease her fright. He simply stood there, hands on his hips, looking down at her, his mouth frowning behind the artificial cheer of red paint. He tipped his head slowly from side to side like the pendulum on a clock, saying nothing, adding to her anxiety with each second. She could swear she heard him laughing under his breath. For a moment, she felt completely alone in the crowded carnival.
He seemed larger than life, as if he were suddenly everywhere at once. She thought about running, sprinting for the hills, but feared he would grab her and snatch her back before she could take a step. Her head was spinning and her heart pounded hard against the inside of her chest. The sounds of the carnival blurred and went away; the only thing she could hear was the clown’s raspy breathing.
Emily stuttered, trying to excuse herself, but she was too frightened to move, the clown’s closeness causing her to freeze in place. She was already shivering and her current situation did nothing to remedy the problem. The clown seemed to be enjoying himself, recognizing her fear and turning it against her.
Children love to sink their teeth into sweet and delicious fruit. This story and teaching will have them sinking their hearts into the Fruit of the Spirit.
