Not long after the evil laughter stopped, we found ourselves in the floor of the walk-in closet in my parents’ room. I had armed myself with a wire coat hanger, and Nick was holding an umbrella. We hid behind the hanging clothes watching the door and trying to think of a plan.
“How are we going to get out of this?” Nick asked.
“I don’t know, but we have to make a plan,” I answered.
“Well I’m fresh out of ideas for how to stop a planetary invasion…you?” Nick said.
“I got nothing,” I said.
Nick thought for a minute, then said, “Maybe we should call the police.”
“They’ll never believe us. They will think we’re crank calling them,” I said.
“We have to get help somehow,” Nick said, almost whining now.
We both sat in silence for awhile, our heads resting against the wall as we tried to come up with a realistic plan. Most of my ideas required the use of a NASA lab or a small nuclear explosive device and, at the time, I was unable to get my hands on either. I hung my head, defeated by my own inability to solve the problem, when an idea presented itself.
I snapped my fingers. “I know, we’ll call my parents and tell them the baby is sick. They’ll have to come home and they’ll see it for themselves.”
Nick seemed suddenly happy again. “Good idea. But first we have to get to the phone.”
“Which means we have to go back out there,” I said.
We slowly approached the closet door and listened to hear if anyone or anything might be standing outside. When we didn’t hear anything, we stood for a few seconds looking at each other, neither one wanting to be the first out the door.
“Go ahead, open it,” I said.
“Ladies first,” Nick offered.
“Now you want to treat me like a lady? Really?” I said.
Nick rolled his eyes and reached for the knob. He lifted the point of the umbrella and aimed it at the door, ready to fend off an attack by anything not strong enough to get past an umbrella.
The door creaked open and we could see the room was empty. We stepped out, Nick leading with his weapon of choice. We had taken two steps into the bedroom when there was a loud boom from outside and the lights went out all around us.
