When Lynn Hutchinson realizes her nightmares are in fact reality, she understands the years of mental anguish from night terrors and depression are caused by something horrifying but quite real. He seemed baffled as he watched the boys continue to pursue the elusive leaves borne into the air by the wind.
"If the outcome is predestined, are we here merely to try and try again until we get it right like some long term class project?" He seemed to be trying to surmise a purpose to it all.
"If so, to what purpose and to what end, is this merely a lesson that for every action there is consequence? What lessons does this teach when the best choices won't necessarily insure a just reward?" He suddenly seemed angry and I didn't know what to reply so I merely nodded. His comments didn't seem to relate to the situation in the least.
"What if they lied? What if without his medication Ricky will die?" He looked at me with a look of sheer pain with his own words. "Is this a lesson in coping with pain and frustration, with an occasional reward thrown in to sweeten the bitterness, or is this merely an exercise to strengthen our so called better qualities? If so, better than what, are we even given a set of rules? Or are the rules made up as we go along, rules made to fit the mistakes?"
He suddenly stood up from his chair and walked quickly into the kitchen. At first I didn't follow.
"What if this is merely a way of testing whether and to what degree you trust them?" He called from the kitchen.
My mind felt numb. What if the being hadn't told me the truth?
