He exploded--a discus of torso and appendages with an over sized head.He flew and landed, bounced off the mat, skidded across the gym floor, careening off the bottom of the bleachers as fans scattered. I raced to him, holding my shoulder, the same one that was chronically injured. Now it felt like it was torn out of its socket. Ignoring the pain, I threw my arms around him, sobbed stupid, useless sounds. A roar went up. Our distance had been posted--new meet record, East Coast record, maybe a national record. We vaulted into first place. I didn't care.
