Do you believe in miracles? Nicole Sorkin certainly does. In her new book, "Miracles Among Us: A Collection of True Miracle Stories," she brilliantly tells of details gathered over years of interviewing thousands of people having had some inexplicable occurrences in their lives. Whether you believe in miracles or not, the people in her book that have had such remarkable circumstances certainly do. Many of whom were not seeking the attention that a book brings fourth, nor the scrutiny of the authenticity which went into the research. They are just thankful of the outcome of their miraculous episode.
This is a classic book that delicately balances the fine line of faith and coincidence, and is both inspirational and uplifting in spirit. Nicole Sorkin tells of two stories which have presented seemingly divine intervention in her own life. One while traveling possibly saving her family from a highway accident, and one effecting her own mind causing her to find someone she wouldn't have been looking for otherwise; Someone desperately needing her help.
Adorned with an appropriate quotation capturing an inspiring thought in the beginning of each story, Nicole Sorkin brings the reader quickly into the significance of each event. She develops and describes the distinctive attributes of each story with a subtle change in her writing voice, bringing authenticity to a heightened level. She doesn't need to nor try to “sell” her belief in miracles within each story, she artfully allows for the reader to judge for themselves how such an occurrence may have happened. She simply reiterates the solemn belief of those within the story that someone, or something, has happened to them in which no explanation other than a miracle is plausible.
Each of her stories are quick and to the point. As truth is more powerful than fiction, the impact of reading this book left an indelible imprint in my mind, truly altering the way I view certain situations. The stories are subtle yet compelling, convincing, and stalwart. One story, Three Feathers, has been written into a screenplay and I understand is being considered by a major movie studio. Miracles Among Us is truly the finest collection of stories in a work of this nature.

Author Nicole Sorkin has compiled thirty-six stories about miracles that happened to ordinary people. Each short chapter tells a different person's story, so readers can read the book all at once or, alternatively, open the book and begin reading anywhere in moments when they need inspiration. The characters in Sorkin's miracle stories are quite varied in their personalities, lifestyles, ages, and occupations. Most people, as they read through the stories, will find someone in the book with whom they can identify.
Sorkin's miracles also span a wide range. In one chapter a family's prayers are answered when they find the perfect kitten for their daughter. Another story tells of a child's miraculous recovery from illness after doctors told his parents that he had less than a day to live. What Sorkin's stories have in common is that in each, the main character did not give up hope but continued to trust his or her intuition or continued to pray. Readers who are going through difficult times in their own lives may find reason to be hopeful after reading thirty-six happy endings. Sometimes everything does come out right in the end. Most inspiring are the stories where a character narrowly escapes death. For example, a family survives a bomb during World War II because a child listens to a voice that tells her to hide in a closet. Everything is destroyed but the walls of the closet, which protect the family under a pile of rubble until rescuers can find them. In another story a man receives medical care in time to save his life because a UPS driver comes to deliver a package and finds him unconscious after an accident. Sorkin urges us to believe that someone will be looking out for each of us, like the characters in these stories, if we pray and have faith in the possibility of miracles.
Each story in this book is a quick read. Some chapters are as short as two pages, so the book would be good for someone who occasionally needs a quick burst of inspiration. Also, each chapter begins with a quotation which relates in some way to miracles. I found some of these inspiring on their own. Readers who have time to sit down and read Miracles Among Us all at once, on the other hand, will come away with the feeling that all problems big and small can have happy endings, however unlikely it may seem at first. Perhaps these readers can carry this message with them and remember it later in situations that feel hopeless.

Nicole Sorkin has spent many years researching stories and interviewing individuals to put together this wonderful collection of short stories about miracles. Whether you believe or not, after reading this book you will be reexamining your faith. Many would have dismissed these events as coincidence, but after hearing the stories directly from those involved you will see there is much more going on.
I have never been a huge believer in miracles; however, this book has opened my eyes to the possibilities. Sorkin presents the stories in a very factual way will little in the way of embellishment. I think that this lends credibility to the subject and the individual cases. If you have ever been curious about the subject of miracles, I recommend you get a copy of this book today.
When two men hit the reset button and decide to go out looking for the good in the world, they not only find it but also a lot more.
