Widowed at 24 by her husband, Horace's, motorcycle accident, Maggie Murphy is broke, stunned, and out of work, and the cosmetic ads say your skin starts drying out at 25. Not wasting time on self-pity she gets a part-time job at a local weekly newspaper which turns into full time when she finds the mutialted body of the columnist whe was hired to replace. Embarrased at the instant attraction between her and the handsome policeman investigating the case, their relationship heats up as they look for clues and he gets her a report on Horace's accident. Horace's spirit appears, unseen by them, trying to tell them his death was dead wrong as Maggie's Aunt Myrtle keeps a close eye on Maggie's social life. Maggie fnds Horace may have been drugged the night of the accident but doesn't believe she's in danger when she has a near fatal accident and starts getting weird phone calls, until a Molotov coctail is thrown into the house she moves from. Maggie and Joe follow up clues with the help and sometmes in spite of: Evil Elvira, a former slave who claims to be over a hundred years old; a co-worker named Fatima, AKA Queen Esther Johnson; and Maggie's Aunt Myrtle who keeps a close eye on them. It's a merry southern romp with Maggie; Joe; zany friends; the MPD; and the FBI all trying to find out 'who all done what?'
