Interesting Concept
My apologies, but I actually picked this up through Tower Bks, but now that I am here...
Actually I was never interested in this type of reading until Jackson's movies came out and there are only so many in film that are worth a darn yet in books there appears to be an endless assortment. TMT:ROTGK interested me and rightfully so. The concept is quite intriguing yet, as many will agree, the ring idea was not so original- at first. However, through the read I found that little of the story actually evolved around it. (with exception to the goblin king's torment through it by an evil Dark Lord) This ring is different by actually harboring the evil spirit as it awaits release unto a new host. I'll admit it took awhile to get used to dialogue between goblins in the second chapter, but afterwards the story focuses on a family of elves that made the story enjoyable and relatable especially between a father named Torinthar and his children. The author wastes no time in engaging the reader into a mystical web of adventure, suspense and intrigue. My only angst is the incredible amount of description within the story and getting used to the writer's style. Probably would make a better movie than a easy read. You really have to pay attention, there are many characters to focus upon throughout the story. The interesting development of a stolen crystal from Imps named Pixy really highlights this story. My only other angst is the way it just ends making you buy the next book to conclude this very long story.


A Fantastical Journey Begins
An intriguing, adventurous tale of wizards, elves, dwarves, goblins and Imps! Would have given a 5 star, except for the ending...our adventurers slide away into an unknown ice world hunting for a special gavel while facing peril. Lord Eltor, embarks on a bitter crusade of conquering and the dastardly evil itself, Darcos, intrudes upon Lady Gwindalyn. Okay, maybe I am a bit harsh on the ending...but I just hate waiting to know how it ends in the second book TMT: Lost Kingdom. The wizards of color and the Pixy are simply marvelous by adding pure joy to the story! WHat I really like about this story is the emphasis placed upon the villains. (I count 3, although Darcos never physically appears) but each represents a different type of evil. Nifere (goblin king) is skillful, knowledgable, vengeful and cleverly daring while Lord Eltor of Laveon is overconfident, vindictive and nothing more than a racist biggot (he simply will not tolerate a Halfling, elf or dwarf ruling upon the Nihoran throne left vacant by the great King Ildain.) I have a hard time deciding which I despise most, but at least Nifere is interesting. My favorite scene, although it is tough to narrow it down (-there are so many great moments) is when Lanolas enters the mysterious cave...really spooky.
