God spoke to me and said, "Do what you did last time; simply put your hands on the keyboard and type." As I prayerfully did this, the words flowed from my spirit as if I was playing music on a piano. There were times when I was overwhelmed by this and struggled with doubt over the content of what I was writing. But as I read it back, I could see the story unravelling before me. This story is a combination of a vivid imagination under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, which takes the reader on a journey through heaven. To truly enjoy this book, allow your imagination to be let loose and for the Holy Spirit to show you, A Little Piece of Heaven.       Excerpt Excerpt from A Little Piece of Heaven Mending the Nets I awoke the next morning to the clash of cymbals and the blast of trumpets. I grabbed my jumper, stood to my feet and ran to the water's edge to see a boat on the water. The water looked so calm and yet the noise of the instruments shattered the quietness. "Come on." a voice shouted, "Over here." As I turned around, a lady appeared at my side and ushered me forward. "We are going to watch the King fish." This did not seem as though it would be an enthralling thing to watch from a distance, but at the lady's command, I ran to the water's edge. The lady was gaunt and her clothes were ragged and dirty; her hair was long and straggly. I was taught not to judge by appearance but I couldn't believe anyone would turn up to greet a King looking like this. We stood looking out over the lake. I saw the boat getting nearer; a net hung over the side. The boat drew as close as it could to where we were standing and I could just about see Jesus repairing the nets. They were old and ripped; I could not see how anyone could catch fish with a net like that. As I looked up, I saw Jesus smile at me; "You will be surprised at the fish you can catch with broken nets. My people are constantly catching fish with broken nets. You see, My church is a broken net and the people in it look as poor and broken as the lady standing next to you. You wouldn't think so by their outward appearances, but if you could see what I can see, you will see a people that look as spiritually poor and torn on the inside as the lady standing next to you looks on the out-side. Many cannot see the condition of My bride as you can now, but this is the truth." As I looked at the lady standing next to me, she looked nothing like a bride. I was saddened that we looked like this to God, as His children and His bride. How foolish we are to think we can pretend to be all that we are supposed to be by turning up at church week after week. Hiding what Jesus sees all the time. Jesus looked at me with a surprised expression and said, "Didn't you know My church looks like this? I love her anyway; I always have and always will, but I long for My bride to be spotless. My Father sees my righteousness when He looks at His children, but I have to see the condition of each soul so that I can do my work. I am under no illusions as to the condition of My people. My sadness is that they are under illusions. Many see themselves in a different light; this is my great sadness. When they see themselves as they really are; only then can they begin to change. The net that you see here is broken and yet I am able to catch fish. This is symbolic of the church and it' current state. For the church to be more effective it must repair its broken nets. A Little Piece of Heaven is allegorical, and I found echoes of Pilgrim’s Progress, The Shack, and The Secret Place – but every book is different, of course. Alison envisages heaven as a mountain being ascended from the lakeside at the bottom, where many believers are content to remain – a mountain in which there are many rooms, and lessons to learn in all of them.

Because I so rarely read allegorical books, I had to keep reminding myself that it is a picture, or a series of pictures. And when I did so, I saw the lessons, the truths, the challenges, the choices of life, and so on. And many of these truths will continue with me. Here are some–

We can dance with the King. When I think of what the Lord has done in my life, I feel like dancing. So, quite often, I simply dance to express my joy. I loved this picture. Express your joy!

A truth that was repeated a few times was that we need to find our ministry, and then engage in it. This is the way to productivity in the kingdom, and fulfilment in living. Likewise, that life is more about a real relationship with Jesus than about ‘church’ or ‘doing good things’ and so on. Also, the more we feel that our earthly life is the most important thing, the more likely we are to feel devastated when we fail. I loved the words on the penultimate page “No matter how low a person goes and how far they fall, there is always a way back, even until the very end.” But we are continually brought back to the fact that life is ‘choices’ – decisions to make in this life, NOW!

The choices we make on earth affect our quality of life here, and in the future the Lord has for us. Remembering always that this is a picture (and not the real thing) read, chew over, meditate – and allow the Spirit of God to apply those things that will enable you to become more effective for the Lord and more greatly fulfilled in life.



I am indebted to Alison for her work encouraging other Christian authors, and I wanted to read her book. Maybe it's not the type of book I would normally read, and so it has been good for me.

This is a fantastic book, it made me laugh, it made me cry and in places it made my jaw drop to the floor. It takes you on a journey that you never want to end, higher and higher up the mountain and even into the presence of God and if that is what heaven is like then I definitely want to go there.

A very enjoyable read and I will certainly read it more than once!
