When Meredith Davison receives a rountine assignment to investigate the theft of four valuable paintings, she soon finds her life taking twists and turns she never bargained for--from murder to being enmeshed with drug smugglers is only the beginning. Not content to let professional law enforcement officers take charge, she uses her job as a subterfuge to finding the truth. But when a hired killer has her in his crosshairs, she realizeds more is at stake than solving a mystery.

When her husband is killed, Meredith doesn't know whom to blame. If she had figured out earlier that Josh Maxwell was using his boat to smuggle drugs into the country, perhaps she could have prevented his death. As an investigator, and a good one, she should have been able to connect the dots. Only now does she begin the question why she married Josh, a man she barely knew. Was she that desperate to be married?

Wanting to justify her acumen as an investigator, and to gain insight into her motivation for marrying Josh, Meredith begins a covert investigation into his past. Her journey leads her to the north Oregon coast and into the path of Steve Lowery, a friend of Josh's and the county sheriff. Believing Steve could be involved in the same drug smuggling operation, she allows herself to become romantically involved with him in hopes of gaining information, but against her better judgement, she begins to fall for the ruggedly handsome sheriff.

As Meredith's investigation brings her closer to solving the mystery surrounding Josh's death, she runs afoul of an angry FBI agaent for interfering in his investigation. Undeterred, she continues her snooping only to find herself a target of a hired killer. She is then forced to turn to Steve for protection and even though he discovers she has been deceiving him about her past, he puts his concern for her safety as his highest priority. But Meredith's independent spirit reasserts itself as she flees from Steve's protection and straight into the arms of theleader of the drug smuggling syndicate.

Excerpt

A very wet and bedraggled young woman stood alongside of the highway when Steve pulled his police car onto the shoulder. She had climbed over a large metal gate that blocked the logging road she had hiked down. Tired and cold, she hugged her arms around herself. Steve jumped from the car and would have grabbed her in his arms, but changed his mind when he saw her muddy clothes. A huge smile lit up his face.
"Are you smiling because you're glad to see me or do I look that bad?" Her teeth chattered.
"Why didn't you call me?"
"Doesn't work. I either broke it when I fell, or it got wet." She looked at Steve's sympathetic face. "Don't look at me. I know I'm a sight and I'm freezing."
Come on, I'll take you home so you can clean up." He put his arm gingerly around her shoulders and led her to the car. "I was about ready to call in a search and rescue team," he said as he opened the car door.
"Do you have something to put on the seat? I'll get it all muddy."
"Yeah, I think so. Just a sec." He went to the trunk and brought back a gray wool blanket that had probably seen service covering a jail cot. Wrapping the blanket around her, he helped her get in the car and then came around and slid in beside her. Starting the car, he turned the heater on full blast. Meredith tightened the blanket around her shivering body.
Instead of driving away, he gazed at her for a few seconds. "I don't care how you look, come here." He reached for her and pulled her into his arms; his kiss long and probing.

Norma Seely, "Maze of Secrets"
"Fans of Mary Higgins Clark will savor the roller coaster mix of danger and emotion confronting the heroine of Deena Lindstedt's Deception Cove. Thrills abound, combined with a satisfying touch of romance and a setteng amidst the wild beauty of the Oregon Coast.
