Chapter 3.
2nd ALLIED TACTICAL AIR FORCE, GERMANY
the tenth of December 1953 finds me with all my kit at RAF Buckeburg, which is the distribution centre for all manpower posted to Europe. The staff is rather suprised that I already know what my destination is, but accept it and off to RAF Celle I go on the "Blue Train".
The RAF base takes it's name from the local town and is of course an ex Luftwaffe base.It was in fact a bit of a showcase base for them. I made my way to the HQ building after checking in at the guardroom and picked up my arrival form on which I have to collect numerous signatures from different departments on the unit.
One of the units that I had to visit was obviously 16 Sqdn so in I went. I almost wished I hadn't. I was shown into a rather dingy office and told to wait for the flight Sergeant to come back. Well in he came, a great lump of a fellow. He would have looked more at home in a boxing or wrestling ring than in uniform. "Whats your name?". "What trade are you?" Oh your a rigger are you! Good. Get down to the stores, get your overalls, get a toolkit then get started on that Vampire in the corner that needs the flying control lever assembly in the rear of the Stb. boom replacing In the modern idiom "I was gobsmacked". I stated to explain that I had to finish arriving and to find somewhere to sleep. With that he blew his top, went to the door and called into the hangar for someone. The someone soon appeared and was told to take me and my kit to the Sdn accomadation block and to get back double quick.
My new aquaintance was "Lester piggott" (No, not the jockey) a Cpl Engine Fitter.
This book has been eight years in the making. It is mostly a jumble of thoughts written down in old spiral notebooks and hidden in the bottom drawer underneath various manuals for software packages and hardware long since turned obsolete.
