Arriving at the meadow’s edge, Garrick noticed three giants. Primal fear arose in his heart. A huge male lowered his spear toward Kira, a gesture the Tamarian soldier interpreted as a warning of imminent attack. Garrick misunderstood what was happening, concluding that the massive humanoid intended to harm his little sister.
He responded by racing toward the threat. An intensity of focus, the well-trained ability to screen out any unnecessary stimuli took over his consciousness. He didn’t need to think. Strong purpose and decisive action dominated his mind, and an emotional distance quickly separated his humanity from the trained, combat-experienced killer he’d become. His awareness heightened. His perception of time slowed.
An attacking giant was something he knew how to handle. This was a problem he could solve. He’d defended his siblings for as long as he could remember, and doing so now seemed completely natural. The young officer drew his .45 caliber sidearm while coasting downhill and fired into the frozen grass, deliberately wide and to the left.
The gunshot startled everyone. “Kira!” Garrick shouted. “Run!”
Jarl concluded that the warning shot was a provocation and charged toward the platinum-haired girl with malevolent resolve. Her eyes widened. Kira’s confidence melted as the ground shook in rhythm to the huge humanoid’s lumbering stride. Knowing that Garrick had a better weapon than she did, Kira turned and dashed back toward her house.
