I am a SWF internationally published writer who holds two degrees, one in behavioral psychology, and I have volunteered as a relationship coach to women in need. That’s not why I felt compelled to pen this guide. I feel I have relevant input and that many how-to books on dating miss the point and confuse the issue. This booklet strives to fulfil two purposes: To offer honest pointers for men, such as vital tips on grooming and foreplay; and also helpful insights for women as relate to the world of dating, based on personal experience, extensive research, and common sense. The content of this guide is from the perspective of someone in the trenches and not on the benches, and so the information is real and raw, and not clothed in clinical psychobabble or in Agony Aunt platitudes. It is written in collaboration with several male friends, whose own input is frank and unbiased. I am using a pseudonym, since many of the scenarios depicted here are autobiographical and highly personal in nature.
I have a twenty-something son, two marriages and an engagement in the rearview mirror, and I’ve been around the block so many times I’m almost dizzy with the déjà-vu’s. I have begun to see patterns: The Control Freak, the Manipulator, the Inept Bachelor; the Party Girl, Gold Digger, and Man Hater, etc. I have even learned to pay attention to astrological signs. Common traits, don’t you know. I’ve dated multiple Mike/Michaels, Robs, Johns, and Andys, and to protect their identities, I’ll refer to them by the name of their favorite beer
What this work doesn’t promise is resounding success in your dating life, just more of it and less frustration, and it doesn’t contain a lot of redundant repetition and filler, just a wealth of information. Nor will I disingenuously protect your feelings. Someone has to tell you the blatant truth if you hope to succeed at this game. I can tell you what your friends and family won’t if they ever hope to speak to you again.
Who This Guide Is For
It is geared towards singles in their thirties through fifties. Millennials probably won’t have much truck with this book. They probably don’t even know what that means. I don’t know what a lot of their jargon means. WTF.

11. WHO PAYS? AND OTHER POINTS OF ETIQUETTE
Should a man reach for the bill? Yes. I don’t think men fully appreciate the time and expense women go to: Hair, nails, facials, clothes, accessories… If a man expects his woman to go the extra mile, indeed he should pay, especially on the first date. It’s gentlemanly. And, yes, women are entitled to apply a few dual standards, too. Going forward, the woman should offer to pay sometimes or else make dinner as a thank-you. Men, consider this too: Women usually assume the responsibility and cost of birth control. Men should always offer to wear protection, but many don’t and won’t. Older men can’t.
If, on the first date, I make a show of taking out my purse and offer to pay half, and he doesn’t refuse, that’s a good indication he might be a cheapskate, especially if it’s only a coffee or one cocktail. If you are not into the man, it would be rude to accept a second drink.
When you meet a guy, especially for the first time, switch off your phone unless you are an ER doctor on call or have a babysitter minding the kids. Men h8 women texting their girlfriends on a date. One told me he walked out on a woman doing just that and left her to pay for the drinks at the bar. A bit over the top, but you get my point. This applies to both genders. If the other person is paying too much attention to their phone and there is no justifiable reason, take yours out and play a game of Solitaire until they say something, at which point reply, “Oh, you done now?” That’s if you haven’t already left. The mirroring of annoying behavior works on subsequent dates, as well. If you don’t like something someone is doing, throw it back at them in matching degree. It’s so much more effective than nagging.
Giving flowers to a woman on the third date is a nice gesture and will score you points. What about opening car doors for her? Only if she’s in very confining clothing and needs help getting out. Seriously, though, it’s a nice gesture, as well. If a woman objects, then don’t do it again unless it’s raining and you have the umbrella.
