With plenty of excitement and strangeness in these tales, "True Cow Tales" is a top pick and very highly recommended.

A fun read
This book transported me back to my childhood. Although my grandparents did not have cattle on their farm, I had plenty of friends that did. Being born in Nebraska put me in the middle of the dairy cattle farming. It was so refreshing to dwell on each and every story in this book

This is a book of stories about cows, the farmers who owned them, the children who showed them at fairs, the ranchers, the dairy queens (we are not talking hamburgers) and the 4-Hers. There is nothing like setting around an old general store and listening to the farmers tell the tales of the best dairy cow, the birth of calves or the old mean bull. That's the memories this book brought back.

This book teaches children the relationship between butter, milk, and cheese and the dairy cow. I could not help but laugh at some of the predicaments the younger children get themselves into while working with their dairy herd.

The pictures are magnificent. If you enjoy reading about the good old days and animal stories, then pick up a copy of True Cow tales. I will save this book for my grand-kids to read. The farms of the past are not the same as the farms of today and this book is a great opportunity for the younger generation to learn a bit of history.

Great Compilation
Although I was born and raised in Wisconsin, I did not really live near a farming community. However, as dairy and farms are such a big part of the overall culture of my state, when I saw the book "True Cow Tales: Literary Sketches and Stories by Farmers, Ranchers, and Dairy Princesses" I was instantly intrigued.

C.R. Lindemer's compilation of forty stories from farmers and ranchers shows what goes on besides the stereotypical images that you already have engrained in your mind. I enjoyed this inside look into their world and hearing each individual story. The stories in the book are grouped into eight different sections: Favorite Cows, Tales by 4-H'ers, Bovine Drama, Dairy Princesses, Cattle Sillies, Cow Poetry, Cattle Escapes, and Bovine Wistfulness. I found the Dairy Princess stories to be especially interesting. For those who don't know, "...dairy princesses are goodwill ambassadors for their state's dairy industry and make many media appearances throughout the year of their reign" and "they all must be connected to the dairy industry through living on a dairy farm or by employment on dairy farms." (p.83)

I think that if you grew up on a farm then this authentic anthology will be of special interest to you as many of the stories and experiences will probably be familiar. However, if you don't have any association with the industry, like me, I think that you will learn quite a bit by reading "True Cow Tales: Literary Sketches and Stories by Farmers, Ranchers, and Dairy Princesses." It is an enjoyable collection.
