17-year-old Kate has lived her whole life in abject poverty, with an alcoholic father and drug-addicted mother, who severely abuses Kate. At school, her second-hand clothing marks her as a target. Her refusal to stand up for herself makes her the recipient of her classmates taunts and bullying. That is, until Henry returns.
Henry Jamison moved away six years earlier, just as he and Kate had begun to develop feelings for one another. He returns to find the bright, funny, outgoing girl he had known now timidly hiding in corners, barely speaking to anyone around her, suspicious of even him.
Kate can't figure out what game Henry is playing with her - for surely it is a game. What else would the gorgeous, popular boy from her past want with her?
Kate finally decides to trust Henry's intentions, opening her heart to him. Just when it seems he might be genuine in his friendship, tragedy strikes, threatening everything Kate has worked so hard to gain. Can Henry help her to overcome this new devastation, or will it tear them apart forever?

A inspirational story that makes you want to try to be a better person
This book is an amazing story how you overcome the abuse by the people who love you the most and not everything may be as it seems in the life of a child or teenager. Although it's a fictional book it's skates the real life realm and is an eye opener for sure. Although I read this book for the first time 4 years ago it has stayed with me all this time and it's one I don't think I'll ever forget and one I'll read occasionally for however long I'm able too!
Very Sweet
This book was heartbreaking. I've never read a protagonist going through so many horrible, but realistic things. I loved how Kate doesn't immediately warm up to Henry. I think that the fact that it takes her so long to trust him makes it more evident that what she is going through has truly changed her. So in regard to all her feelings, her beginning relationship with Henry, and her fears, all of that was believable.
So I loved this story, especially in the beginning. However, there were two things that really bothered me in this book: 1) the kids at school. Now I know people can be horrible and that the author probably wanted to make it as bad as possible for Kate, but I thought the harassment and bullying was overdone. Was it effective? Yes. It was honestly nightmare-worthy, but I have a hard time believing absolutely no one wanted to be her friend until Henry just because of the way she dressed and sort of acted. 2) Kate's and Henry's relationship. Oh, it was so cheesy. Maybe I shouldn't consider it a bad thing because I did actually like the cheesiness, but I feel like I should just warn people that their relationship is sort of fairy-tale like in the middle of a horrid, realistic story.
I had to stick with 5 stars for this book even with the overdone bullying and relationship cheesiness because the story was so good. I could not put it down until I finished it. Definitely worth buying.
Broke & Warmed my Heart
I was instantly drawn to this book from the synopsis. My heart was filled with emotion from each page, whether it be love or pain. This book constantly tore my heart open to the point where I cried. It would then lift me back up with its subtle, sweet love that the Henry and Kate had for each other. Once my heart was healed, it was once again being broken. This was such a great read for so many reasons. Obviously, I loved the love story between the characters, but this story offered so much more than the ordinary love story. It offered a chance to see into the lives of other people. It was heart breaking to know that kids are treated this way and live like Kate for years. Not only does it offer insight into abuse stories, but kids who are bullied. Kate was so unfortunate to be dealt this deck of cards in her life. Luckly, for the sake of a good book, Kate had a bright light in her life in the shape of Henry. That was the most heart warming part of the story- his love for her. If only every kid who's every been abused or bullied could be given the love that Kate was given from both Henry and his family, then this world would be a better place.
