In the summer of 2000, Setsuko Takahashi, a beautiful, successful, pregnant single woman, commits suicide by drowning herself in the ocean after learning that the father of her child is dumping her for someone else. But, before she dies, she vows that, if given the chance, she'll come back and rid the world of all misery and suffering. Unfortunately, for mankind, she is given that chance and she makes good on her threat. Then, it's up to the LAPD, with the assistance of some very unlikely volunteers, to keep an already desperate situation from becoming catastrophic.
Excerpt
Ethan asked Larry's wife to translate one more question. She agreed.
"I want to make sure I understand all of this. You're telling us that even though you are already dead, you feel justified in taking the lives of so many people, just because they're unhappy? Why?"
But, before Toyoko could begin translating the question, Setsuko grinned and said in perfect English, "Actually, you Americans have an expression that best explains my justification for what I do. 'Misery loves company.'"
