As a novel, Phantom's Fixation is an engrossing read, but it is much more than that. It may be one of the few books of its genre to be written with an African American audience in mind. While the characters are for the most part, men and women of colour, JJ Paul offers no stereotyping or pandering to the ethnicity of his characters. There is no wide use of ebonics in the dialogue. His heroine speaks with a cultured tongue and she comes across as an educated, intelligent, courageous and loyal woman. She is trained in the martial arts, she knows how to shoot a gun, and she searches for truth not violence. All in all a great role model.
I think that JJ Paul has written a book he can be proud of. This is a mystery that anyone can enjoy, young or old, despite their background"

The Phantom's Fixation turned out to be a great mystery find, for both myself and my younger sisters who love mystery reads with a twist. There were a couple times that I thought elements of the story were not going to work, or was confused for a minute, but I love how all of those threads were quickly worked into the story-- and done so well. This is what really made Phantom's Fixation a great read for myself, and so exciting for my younger sisters.
I loved the main character, Nina, which was why I let my sisters read the book-- good strong female characters are always hard to find! And even the minor characters in the story were well thought out and developed. I would totally recommend this read for anyone that loves a good mystery, reads with a twist, YA readers, as well as adults. It turned out to be the perfect read for our day in!
