Excerpt
The white van was speeding, driving around downtown Seattle. The vehicle had been stolen three days earlier. Up and down the narrow, steep streets, the van swerved and screeched as it clipped corners haphazardly. There were only three men: one driving, the other two holding their own in the back.
Ned, the driver, glanced nervously from behind the wheel, not used to driving in the city. Reed held a gun out in front of the third man’s face.
“Ask him again. I’m certain he’s the one,” Ned shouted over his shoulder.
“Who has your money, Newgate? We want ten million now,” Reed demanded.
Clayton struggled in the back of the van. “You’ve got the wrong guy. I don’t give a damn about dying.”
Reed shoved the gun against Clayton’s temple. “Then you are gonna go see your precious wife sooner than you think.”
Clayton’s eyes bored into the driver’s back. “Go ahead, punk!”
“We are gonna kill you if you don’t pay us.” The gun’s butt was shoved deeper into Clayton’s temple.
“Listen, getting violent with me is meaningless. Even if I were this guy, I wouldn’t pay you a dime. So forget it.”
“You don’t fool us, you stingy bastard! I’ll give you something to cry about.” Reed pulled the trigger slightly.
“No!” Ned reached over and grabbed his twin brother’s arm. “Not yet.”
“Go on, kill me!” Clayton shouted. “I don’t give a damn.”
“This guy is crazy. Don’t shoot, Reed. He ain’t worth nothing dead, you idiot!”
“Go ahead, kill me!”
The butt of the .45 hit hard against his head. “Why not waste him?”
Clayton massaged his head. “You won’t see a dime.”
Suddenly, a force grabbed Reed’s arms, holding him back, sending the gun flying. “What the—?”
Clayton scrambled to the back of the van.
“I can’t move!” Reed shouted.
Ned shot back a glare at his twin. “Reed, get the gun!”
“I can’t, Ned. I can’t move. A force is holding me back, dammit.”
“It’s her,” Clayton gasped. “Jochebed, save me!” Clayton started to fumble with the back door of the van.
“Reed, goddammit!”
“I can’t, Ned. Something is holding me back.”
