Excerpt
Sapphire’s gaze remained fixed on the open door of the spacecraft. A dim shadow preceded the appearance of a tall, powerfully built man. He paused on the top step, Sapphire’s eyes locked on the figure of a sculpted warrior who appeared in the door. His face in shadow, his muscular body covered in a material that appeared spun from sapphires. Tightly knit trousers of darker cobalt hugged his muscular legs covering boots of the same hue. Dawn’s sunlight, what little slipped between the building clouds, glinted off white gold metal bars on each shoulder supporting a heavy white gold chain of intricately worked bars draped across his broad chest. Around his muscle hard waist an intricately worked belt and scabbard, made from ebony silk cords, held a menacing appearing sword. His face remained in deep shadow, his features undistinguishable, except for a faint golden gleam coming from his eyes as he appraised her.
Sapphire moistened her full lips, unable to stop a rush of adrenaline from unexplained, heated blood that flowed rapidly through her body. Those golden, gleaming eyes remained fixed on her as he took two steps down the stairs from his craft and stopped. She felt his gaze drink her in – absorbing her. Bracing one hand casually against the bottom edge of the craft’s door he descended the last two steps to stand on the ground. Now she could see his hair, a thick, three-shade mixture of dark brown, auburn, and an unusual striped red mixture. He wore the thick, long mass bound, braided back from the nape of his neck, the true length undeterminable in the low light, but the colors reminded her of a tiger’s heavy coat.
She felt no malevolence from this man, only a true concern for her. A deep, passionate stirring emanated from him. His male posture and bearing was overwhelming. He reminded Sapphire of a great male tiger she’d seen in a wildlife preserve. Sapphire felt his aura as a tangible force, flowing into her already aroused body, astonished a complete stranger, an alien, could affect her in such a manner. Sapphire remembered the monk’s words. This was the first man the monk spoke of, an honorable lord, a prince of his world and soon the evil one would arrive.
His powerful bearing alarmed her, accustomed as she was to Earthmen, which were more unpretentious. She detected danger surrounded him like a mantle, but she felt drawn to him. Warned not to fight her destiny, she shouldn’t try to struggle against his commanding presence, but Sapphire wasn’t one to be dominated. He approached cautiously, as if he she was a bird which at any moment would fly. Sapphire wondered if he sensed her fear of him or perhaps, suspecting her powers, feared her.
“Earth woman, was it you who generated the energy beams that assaulted Myng the Cruel?” His tone was respectful and calm, his question direct. Though the name Myng the Cruel had no meaning to her, she suspected he referred to the master of the giant ship her beams had struck.
Sapphire’s mouth went dry, she couldn’t speak. Fear of the unknown threatened to overpower her, accompanied by a strong unexplained attraction to this strange alien male whose appearance sent her blood racing.
“Who are you?” she managed to ask. Sapphire’s tone was bold, once she found her voice.
“Forgive me my lady. I am Prince TyGer, uncrowned heir to the planet Zantari. My forces were attempting to stop Myng when the blue beams appeared. Without their assistance, we wouldn’t have been successful. My world would have totally succumbed to Myng.” Pausing he bowed his head then straightened and continued. “As it is, I lost my parents, my sister and my fiancée. Myng killed my parents. Only my sister and fiancée survived, but now belong to Myng. The beams allowed my people to escape back to our world,” TyGer answered her truthfully, the need for expedience pungent in his voice.
Psychic waves of pain radiated from him, and her tone changed to low and soft – compassion deep in her voice. She experienced strong empathic emotions toward this alien prince, “I’m sorry for your losses, but what do you mean by – belonging to this Myng? Such as slaves?”
TyGer studied her as she did him. As daylight grew, she could see his face and her heart raced. His noble appearance and proud bearing was of an ancient warlord. A dynamic and fierce demeanor told her much of his character. His golden eyes truly glowed – as her blue eyes did. Pain of his loss was apparent in their depths’, though he attempted to mask it. He sincerely hurt for his people and his family.
“Slaves!” he spat the word out before explaining. “Once Myng takes a woman to his bed, she is no longer – ah, willing to return to another man. She is gone, as if she were dead, perhaps possessed, would better explain…”
“Do you love her?” Sapphire asked, unable to understand why any woman would willingly leave a compassionate and powerful man such as this prince, for a tyrant. Her attraction to him was a rarity. She found her breath shortened by his presence. He left her weak with desire, innocent and unknown emotions up to this point, except the stimulation brought on by the beams. This level of arousal wasn’t an issue with her skittish, one or two date boyfriends who ran when her eyes glowed from the simplest kiss.
“No, not yet, we didn’t know each other well. Our marriage was arranged, a political joining. Still she was to be my wife, though we had only met twice. Myng also has my sister, whom I do love. She is also under the conqueror’s control and was given to one of his commanders as a – prize,” he spit out those words too. His eyes bored into her. “Now we must consider your world. If you are the one who sent those beams, and I believe you are, Myng will soon come for you and take your world as his own. You, earth woman, are not safe. The methods he will use to obtain your cooperation …” she felt the shudder that passed through his person on her account. In his eyes, she saw his fear for her. “What are you called?”
“My name is Sapphire, because of the color of my eyes. And yes, the beams came from me. I didn’t send them. I was born with an ability, possibly a curse. The energy amassed into a ball, drawn from my body, when I observed the battle through the telescope.” She pointed toward the giant earth bound part of the instrument. “I can’t control it, but it went to the ship you spoke of. Somehow, I knew it was evil. I can’t explain it.” She was shaking now, almost beyond control. Not wishing to explain the entire story, it was too personal. TyGer approached her. A tall man, he towered over her though she wasn’t short. His features, now clear were strikingly handsome and his forceful countenance struck fear deep inside her. Sapphire remembered his face from her vision in the night.
Large golden eyes, shaped like a cats’ captivated her, complementing equally impressive strong, masculine features. Beneath a straight, regal nose, his full sensuous lips completed the face of a powerful, fair leader, who hopefully would be compassionate. His eyes held fire, honor and a strong character as the monk predicted.
I wonder what his lips would taste like. Will he run in fear when my eyes begin to glow from the passion I already feel?
