Images of Americans of African ancestry
dating back two centuries is the first book to visually document the history and contributions of Black people to the Hawaiian community.

Seafaring was a refuge for Black men to seeking relief from the hard labor on plantations. These seamen had a high psyhological profile that lured them to distant horizons. The Pacific Basin and Hawai'i were free territories that enticed men of Africana descent to jump ship seeking freedom. In Hawai'i, King Kamehameha I welcomed his Black brothers. The most noted was Anthony Allen who made the Hawaiian Islands his home in 1810.

The National Park Underground Network for Freedom has validated the history about Allen's Journey to Freedom. In Honolulu, April 2020, Anthony D. Allen wayside signage funded by NPS has been placed on the grounds of the Washington Middle School in Honolulu.

Lewis Temple, the inventor of the Harpoon Toggle Iron retired in the Islands in 1836.

Kamehameha III hired four Black men for the "King Band".  They were often seen marching down the street near the Royal Palace (Iolani) playing their instruments.

Frank Paiva, Sr. came from Brazil.  He jumped ship in Hilo, Hawaii in the late 1800s. After a hundred years, the Paiva family is still intact on the Big Island (Hawai'i) today.

The book will introduce you to the people of Africana descent who have made contributions in politics, civic, religion, military, professional & community.
