A gunship rose sluggishly. Its engines whined with the struggle to overcome the burden of clinging bodies. Guns barked. Zeros fell, only to be replaced by more. Finally the gunship toppled over. Blades shattered as they struck the ground. The fuselage crumpled. The fuel tank ruptured.
The explosion thumped into his chest like an invisible fist. The mechanical carcass burned with a stinging heat, even from that distance. He began to tremble. The zeros swarmed towards him. The last gunship took off and hovered to provide support.
“They can’t do this,” he said in shock. “They’re zeros... they can’t do this to us...”
Nobody paid any attention. Chief cradled the PM in his arms; his face screwed up with genuine anguish. The PM moaned, isolated from the world around him.
