"This is what I plan to have someday," Tyler Newly was saying. He indicated the surroundings including Jade as she handed him his dessert. "A beautiful home, servants to wait on me, prestige. This is the way to live."
Amos Granville studied the young man before him. He saw only too well that his young guest was hungry for money and power. He shook his head, knowing the futility of heading down that path. How did one convince youth of what he in his old age had learned? Money and power were no guarantee of happiness.
"Has Palmer encouraged you to try to obtain all this?" He lifted his arms to indicate his own wealth.
Tyler shifted uncomfortably. He didn't want to go through all that again, especially with this man. How could they understand? The Granvilles already had their wealth.
"Palmer is content to live as he is now without a home like yours," Tyler admitted. "But I've never had all this. I plan to get it. I plan to be somebody."
Jade saw the look of disappointment that crossed Amos's face. She looked carefully at Tyler and wondered why he wanted to be "somebody." He turned, and his eyes locked with hers for an instant before he turned away and again ignored her presence.
Jade felt in that instant that he knew exactly what she was thinking. She nervously finished serving and prepared to leave the room when a new thought struck her. He had been told to act like this to servants! She was sure of it! Someone must have told him that this was the proper way to act if you were "somebody" important. Somehow she knew it was an act. Now, with Cecile Granville, it was the real thing, but Tyler Newly didn’t seem to be acting naturally at all. Yes, that was it!
She headed for the door and heard Amos's voice behind her say, "Would you excuse me a moment, Tyler?" The old gentleman made his way to the door after her.
She waited in the entryway.
"Jade, dear, I have a big favor to ask of you," he said after he had shut the door. "Mr. Newly will be staying with us, and so is Cecile. Now, tonight for supper I would like to invite a few more people. I'm on my way to see Mrs. Todd about it now, but what I wish to ask of you is, would you be one of my dinner guests tonight?"
Startled by his request, Jade shook her head emphatically. "No, sir, I can't do that. I'm your maid now. I can't suddenly appear as your guest!"
"Jade." Amos chuckled. "No one will recognize that you are the same person. Honestly, even I hardly recognize you in that outfit."
She again shook her head, but he spoke before she could.
"I thought that might be your answer, so you leave me with no choice. When I have overnight guests in my home, you know you are required to stay here and help out, even sleep here if necessary, right?"
She nodded cautiously.
"So you will be 'on duty' tonight, so to speak, and I order you to appear as my guest." He spoke with a stern voice and a twinkle in his eye.
"But why?" she wondered.
Amos became serious. "You've seen Cecile, dear. I can tell already that that girl is up to no good. I don't want her troubling our young friend in there and confusing him anymore about how rich people ought to behave. His ideals are certainly mixed up."
Jade nodded in agreement and Amos said, "You noticed it too, didn't you? I thought you would. Somebody has given that poor man some misinformation. I don't understand how he can think like that and still talk like he did about Palmer accepting his religion. Anyway, that's where you come in."
"But what can I do?" Jade was still puzzled.
"Just be yourself, dear. You will do more than you realize by just being yourself. I'm an old man now, and I've seen a lot of different people act a lot of strange ways. You, on the other hand, never put on an act. No matter how you look on the outside, you are the same wonderful person on the inside. Trust me. Please do this for me."
Jade gave in uneasily. "What about my duties? Mrs. Todd will certainly need help tonight."
Amos chuckled again. "That's what I like about you. You're always concerned about others. I'll get more help in for tonight. Don't worry about a thing. Just be ready for a relaxing evening." He walked to the kitchen in a cheerful mood, and Jade looked after him, wondering what she had just gotten herself into.
