Casey sank into the soft hotel mattress and pulled the comforter up to his chin. A tiny sliver of waning sunlight peeked between the drawn curtains. He turned away from the light and closed his eyes. Within moments, he was asleep. His breathing slowed and he moved into a veiled world of dreams.
He awoke to a bright sky and peered through clenched lids at the merciless orb of sun floating high in a cloudless blue bowl. He felt flushed and disoriented. Casey sat up and assessed his surroundings. It took him a minute to realize that he was in the dream.
Memories flooded his brain and for some time he was unable to move. All the while a running commentary ran through his mind like the crawl on a 24-hour news channel.
"This isn't my dream anymore," he thought. "If it's not my dream, then I have no control. What do I do now?"
The memories trickled to a halt and the boy started to panic. He remembered the lost look on Brody's face in the first dream; how he had struggled to stay connected to the journey and his traveling companions. Now Casey was caught in his own web of memory, and it was a luxury he could not afford. He was young, yes, but he had seen much in his short life, and he knew enough about the dream to know he could be in danger.
