Outside the monastery Rose rested on the bench and gazed at the gardens in front. My, wouldn’t Jack have loved to see this. He loved art. He probably wouldn’t have enjoyed the farmhouse so much, but the fine wine and gourmet food would have been perfect for him. This would have been a wonderful trip to share with him. The thought surprised her since it had been weeks since she wished Jack was going with her on the trip instead of these women. Interesting. It was only the third day, but she was beginning to realize there was more to life than Jack. She’d always loved traveling to nice places with him, but she couldn’t help noticing the difference without him. It was nice being able to contribute something to a conversation, and it was rewarding knowing her opinion as to what to see and do mattered. Jack always had all the plans made right down to the restaurants where they dined, and for that matter, what they ordered. He took such pride in ordering for her, and as the years went by, he started doing it without even asking what she wanted. Yes, this was nice. And, although she was a bit taken back when she saw Wendy scrutinizing her clothes, it was selecting things herself, even if they were old and too tight.
