"Where in Dellose' name is he?" said Keeth, fuming with impatience. Kyshin was nowhere to be seen and Keeth knew that his friend had been looking forward to this day, determined not to be late for once. Keeth bounced with anxiety as he heard the gathering bells, signaling the start of the enrollment procedure.
"He better get here soon." Keeth muttered. The Academy gates were already closed, in preparation for the trials.
Like the other trial aspirants, Keeth had entered through the guardhouse, which would remain open for latecomers. But there was no way of knowing when your name would be called, so it was best to get in early.
``Food,” Keeth thought. ``He was on his way and smelled food.” Kyshin’s healthy appetite was well known at the Academy – he had spent much of his life living in the forest, and the wealth of food available at Fort Melway was irresistible.
Keeth hurried toward the courtyard where everyone had to wait for their names to be called. The high walls reared up on either side, sightless and windowless. The Forton Fighting Academy was a mighty structure perched on a promontory that jutted out into the sea. Steep cliffs surrounded the Academy on three sides, as strong a natural defense as any in existence.
Below the soaring walls of the Academy a small township had sprung up to serve the needs of the Academy students and guards. Here the students found lodgings, and ate at the handful of inns scattered amongst the blacksmiths and apothecaries. Keeth pictured Kyshin being drawn by the nose into Black Madge’s Inn on a waft of rich stew. Keeth checked the rules he had scribbled on a piece of crumpled parchment in cramped, nervous writing.
``Two names will be called at a time to enter a specific room within the Academy where the two will battle. The reward for victory will be enrollment for last stage training.’’ He glanced up at the windowless walls of the academy. No natural light was allowed in there because of the strong magic that operated within its walls. Within the academy, elaborate training scenarios could be created by the Forton Mages, landscapes alive with dangerous creatures where the students of the academy could hone their skills. This test would determine whether he and Kyshin were worthy to enter the academy for last stage training with the Forton Mages.
Two strong iron doors closed the academy off from the courtyard in which he stood. Behind those doors was a deep entrance leading to another set of doors. Once the outer doors closed behind the aspirants, no light could enter. Beyond the second set of doors – well, only those who were accepted to enter for enrollment knew what lay beyond, and he and Kyshin would be among the initiated today – if Kyshin showed up.
The bells signaled the calling of the first two names, and Keeth hoped that Kyshin wasn't one of them. The longer it took for the guard to call their names, the greater the possibility that Kyshin might actually be here. His name may be called first, of course, and he wondered who would be called to enter the academy with him. He hoped it would be a worthy opponent, someone who would give him a good fight.
The bellringer stood at the top of the deep stone steps leading to the iron doors, and Keeth saw a dark, imposing figure stride over to him as the bell clanged out over the courtyard. The Captain of the Forton Guard quelled the bell ringer with a glare, and then turned to face the assembled contenders.
"First Fighters are - Steven and Grath!" The Captain’s name was Draco, and he spoke in a snarling voice. He wore no armor – the dull glint of scales was his own skin, rumored to be the remnants of the shape he once wore, before his powerful will changed his form closer to a human.
War is fought, not only on the field, but also within the mind.
