The shade crumpled to the cavern floor the moment Shanta Raau removed his hand from its scarred forehead. It joined the other corpses at the master’s feet. The smell of earth and burnt flesh mixed with the potent stench of fear filled his nostrils. He focused his merciless stare on the remaining spawn arrayed throughout the dim interior. Their hoods were drawn back to reveal lumps of dark flesh where ears and noses should be. Their pockmarked skin was stretched over misshapen skulls that were neither human nor of any known beast. Each knelt before him. And each made a point to avert their gaze—all except one. Srova. He looked closer at the creature he considered his field marshal. There was no fear there. If anything, it reeked of an insatiable thirst for blood.
Good, he thought. It was stronger than the others. Far from his equal but more powerful than many of the others combined.
Raau lifted his head slightly in satisfaction. The creation of Srova had taken a great deal of skill, almost costing him more than he intended. But when it emerged from its bloody host, he knew the effort had been well worth it. This one is powerful and will serve its purpose well. Its lack of fear can be tolerated—for now.
He turned his attention back to the others. They were his seekers. Barring Srova, they were the most skilled of his creations—and they were failing him.
