Amanda is in England trying to solve the mystery of a missing vintage novel while taking in the sights.

Twelve year old Amanda Ross loves to travel and is excited to be visiting her friend Leah in England. While enjoying a visit to the Isle of Wight, she discovers a vintage novel is missing from a set. Determined to find the missing book, she encounters a couple of tough, street kids, an elderly bookstore owner and a clever Maine Coon cat. Her search takes her to Windsor Castle, the Tower of London, Hampton Court and the London Eye; followed by a mysterious woman and two men in dark suits. Is she risking her life to find this novel?

Excerpt

Amanda peered out the window, through the mist, down onto smoking chimneys and blackened roofs. Her excitement grew as the airplane descended.

‘Here I am, at last, in the land of the Potters – Beatrix and Harry,’ Amanda thought as the plane lurched to a halt at Heathrow Airport, London.

She followed the other passengers to the luggage retrieval. Although she had only flown outside of Canada twice before, she felt quite comfortable with the process. She took her bag off the luggage carousel and proceeded to the customs gate.

“Hey you!” shouted someone behind her. Amanda turned to see a teenage girl with a bright pink Mohawk, tons of make up, earrings everywhere and a very short skirt. “You sure that’s your bag?”

“Yes, I am.” Amanda looked at the luggage tag. “See – here, this is my name.”

“Um, so you’re Amanda Ross – from Canada I see.” The girl examined the luggage tag. “Sorry t’bother you. Ta Ta. Stay out of trouble.” She winked at Amanda with a dark lined eyelid, caked with mascara. She joined a teenage boy with tattooed arms wearing an England T-shirt and ripped jeans.

When Amanda emerged from customs, she found Leah and her dad waiting for her with balloons and flowers and a big sign that said, “Welcome to England, Amanda!”

“Wowza! Look at you,” said Leah as she gave her a big hug. “I think you’ve grown.”

“I don’t know about that - but you sure have,” said Amanda as she looked up at her tall, thin friend.

“Let’s get you out of here,” said Mr. Anderson as he took Amanda’s bag from her. “I am sure you’re tired after the long flight and most likely hungry.”

“It wasn’t nearly as long a flight as to the United Arab Emirates or even to Spain,” replied Amanda.

She shivered when they got outside. With a slight drizzle, the air felt damp. Mr. Anderson led them to a shiny, silver-grey BMW. He put Amanda’s bag in the trunk, went around to the passenger side and said, “You girls can sit in the back together. It’s unlocked.” He got in and sat in the passenger seat.

‘That’s weird,’ thought Amanda. ‘Who is going to drive? Do they have a chauffeur?’

It was when Mr. Anderson started the car; she noticed the steering wheel on the right side. “Now, that is strange,” she murmured.

They eventually found their way out of the busy airport parking lot. As Leah’s dad turned to exit he pulled into the wrong lane. “Oh no!” Amanda squeezed her eyes shut for the inevitable head on collision.

“What’s wrong, Amanda?” Leah asked with a concerned look.

Professional Reviews

Fantastic Read
No sooner does Amanda's spring break vacation begin than she's confronted with a series of mysterious events. Will she be able to figure out what has really been happening to the missing books in Charlie's store?

The most memorable scenes in this story involve Amanda discovering the cultural differences between her hometown in Alberta and London. Everything from clotted cream to the advanced age of certain buildings is new and exciting to her. Amanda's joyful reactions to the rich histories of the places she visits piqued my interest in learning more about them.

What made the plot even more rewarding was how slowly the mystery of the missing books unfolds. Amanda has to work hard to uncover every single clue, and none of them are easy to piece together. I expected to figure out what was happening much earlier on in the plot than I actually did, and it was quite rewarding to finally come to the correct conclusion.

This is the third book in the series, but I had no issues catching up with the highlights of Amanda's previous adventures. If anything the tantalizing glimpses of the mysteries she's attempted to solve in the past made me want to go back and read the first two instalments! Amanda is intelligent, resourceful and plucky, and those traits make reading about her adventures a real pleasure.

Amanda in England: The Missing Novel is a delightful romp through modern-day London. I highly recommend it for readers in late elementary school or for anyone who loves solving playful mysteries that do not reveal their secrets easily.

Another Great Amanda Adventure
Amanda is going on another adventure! This time she is visiting her friend Leah in England. Amanda is having a great time seeing all there is to see in London! While Amanda was visiting a castle in England, she notices a boy running away with a book under his arm. Amanda learns that the book is a rare novel that was stolen! Amanda is determined to find the book, find out why it was stolen and return it. With the help of Leah and a new friend Rylee, Amanda goes off on another adventure around the great country of England.

I am a fan of the Amanda series and I think this book was another great adventure! The action in the book is great. Ms. Foster writes very exciting books that are good for all ages to read. I really liked learning about London from this book. I think that's what I like the most about the Amanda series, you learn about the location the book takes place in. The Amanda character is a great heroine and I think boys as well as girls will really like her. Amanda is a modern girl who a lot of kids can relate to. I can't wait to read the next adventure Amanda goes on!
