Excerpt
Somebody was dragging him by his hair.
His feet were trailing after him, his heels kept catching divots and puddles and he tried to move but he couldn’t. His head hurt, while his eyes were barely able to stay open for more than a few seconds. There was labored breathing beside him and some sort of muttering over him. He tried hard to remember what had happened, except everything was jumbled in his head and he couldn’t. There was only the faint memory of mist, cold and disappointment. He didn’t know why or even what they meant.
That large hand in his hair tightened and rough nails scraped against his scalp. His eyes tried to open more than just barely, but they were as heavy as his seemingly comatose limbs. Above him was a sky of slate, at his side was a blur of black and he struggled to fight that heaviness only he was unable to and everything went dark again.
When he awoke for the second time, he was being carried over somebody’s broad shoulder. There was a thick arm holding his legs close to an equally broad chest and that muttering had stopped. His eyes, though no longer quite as weighty as what they had been, they were still unable to open without having to close almost immediately. His head still hurt, a fuzziness sort of lingered around the edges and he still couldn’t remember what exactly had happened to him. All that he was able to see was legs encased in dark red and some of the dullest grass in existence and this person that was carrying him—a man, he guessed—he reeked of sweat and decay. This man had taken him, only he couldn’t recall who he was or even what he looked like. He could remember trees, a forest of them and he could vaguely remember trying to escape from his abductor, but nothing else.
He didn’t know why this man had taken him, nor where this man was bringing him and he was slipping back into unconsciousness even as he desperately attempted to fight it off.
With his last thoughts, Logan tried to remember how he had gotten here.
