The story of Jack is written with great insight into the psychological workings of a young man's mind, and as the reader follows his moods, and sometimes quite violent behaviour, one cannot help but feel a growing empathy for this confused and angry young man. So your parents finally let you go then?" Jack queried as he fastened the straps on his scuffed black Adidas backpack. At thirteen Jack was broad and tall for his age, standing at a height of five-foot ten, though at the moment he was sitting down on the green carpet of his best friend‟s living room. Originally the house had boasted two separate living rooms, but after the dividing wall had been knocked out it was now one large, spacious room. He had just finished packing his backpack for the trip which they had been planning for weeks. The plan was to camp out in the woods behind Mikes house, and it wasn't going to be too hard for them to find the path which led to it, as it was very close to Mikes back gate. They only had to follow the path for twenty minutes, and as soon as the field came into view go across it and straight into the woods. It had all been Jacks idea. He was an outdoor kind of person and hated being inside where he always became stressed; he loved the freedom the outdoors provided. Whenever he was indoors he felt blocked-in, trapped. He looked across at Mike. Mike was two months older than he and taller, and whilst Jack had very short black hair Mike had long sandy brown hair which was always getting in his eyes...as it was now. Jack watched Mike brushing the offending hair away from his forehead. "Yeah it was my mum who said yes, my dad was still against it."
