Marta and Ed Robbins, long childless, are thrilled when their friend Kyla tells them of an orphaned infant in need of parents. They travel to the city of Port-of-Lords, where Kyla leads the Gifted Community. That Community gathers to celebrate the baby's Naming-Day, a joyous occasion that ends in disaster when an old enemy kidnaps and threatens to kill the child. Marta, Ed, Kyla, and Veronica, Kyla's 14-year-old ward, have all encountered Jerome Esterville previously and know what a dangerous foe he is. Still, although the Community members have differing powers and are at various levels of ability, they believe that by pooling their magical powers, they can easily overcome a solitary foe. They soon learn that Jerome has honed his own magical skills and has greater strength than their small community is prepared to contend with. As the fourteen members of the Gifted Community prepare to contend with Jerome, egos clash, powers collide, tempers flare, and buried fears surface to paralyze the power of those who have encountered Jerome previously. Kyla's leadership falters, and Marta and Veronica must step into the gap. Jerome is determined to destroy them all. The Gifted must be led to cooperate and coordinate their efforts or they are doomed.

Mayzie came into the room. “Veronica, Miss Marta wants you to come try on the dress she’s making you. And it’s time for the baby’s feeding.”
“Time for Dreama’s feeding,” Veronica said, not moving. “Call her Dreama, Mayzie.”
“It’s bad luck to use the name before Naming-Day. I’ve told you over and over.”
Veronica laughed. “That’s a silly superstition. Even Aunt Kyla says so. We gifted don’t believe in such things.”
Mayzie sniffed. “You gifted don’t believe in a lot of things us normal folk know to be so.”
“You mean like the gods?” Veronica asked, feeling mischievous. Aunt Kyla had warned her not to tease Mayzie, but Aunt Kyla was out shopping. And Veronica did enjoy seeing Mayzie get all flustered.
“Hush, you know what I mean,” Mayzie said, rubbing her hands together nervously. “It’s not smart to mock the gods, whatever you think, young missy.”
Veronica laughed. “Our Power-Giver is stronger than Ondin. His power isn’t limited to just this one province. I’ll bet he’s stronger than all twelve undergods put together.”
“I won’t listen to such nonsense.” Mayzie picked Dreama up and swept out.
