Emma, main character in the "Daughters" series, in her second year of college goes undercover into the dark world of pornography.

Emma, in her second year of college (studying psychology & criminal justice) goes undercover into the dark world of pornography.
Yes, it’s legal, but an online writer has stumbled onto a website showing brutal training methods and has posted a description for the whole world to see. It’s pretty clear he thinks the girls in the short clips are underage, which would make this particular site illegal.
One of Emma’s college mentors has seen the blog post, knows her plans, and contacts her. She reads the post, decides to find the location of the porn studio, and—one way or another— take it down. She had planned to attend classes year-round and graduate early, but this is more important. She knows it could be dangerous, but helping young girls in trouble has become her life goal.

Scene 2 of Chapter 3 Her Assignment

****
During the next several days Emma went over the blog again and again—adding it to her regular studies—and forced herself to learn at least more about hacking, and did—with help from her computer instructor—manage to find the blogger’s physical address, which led to a name and phone number.
The end of the quarter arrived. Packed and ready, she stood with Alexis and Kristin, her two best friends in…well, all of creation, ever. She had told both girls the whole story and her plans. They had politely listened but she knew neither was very positive about her going.
“What if you get trapped again,” Alexis asked, swallowing, “You would disappear into that awful world and we might never see you again.”
She could see her friend was getting close to tears. Alexis was strong, and had always been there for her, just as solid as an oak post, but this moment that oak appeared to be weakening, so she stepped forward and took her best friend tightly into a hug…and then the tears came. She felt Alexis’ body actually quake against her.
And Kristin—with a softer heart than Emma and Alexis put together—had always been the crier, but evidently was holding up. Emma glanced at her and saw tears written all over the girl’s face, but evidently was holding back to give the two best friends a private hug. No way! She reached out with her right arm and Kristin came right in, and then the tears poured from all three.
“Oh, I love you two girls with all my heart,” Emma said between sobs.
Alexis and Kristin managed something similar between even worse sobs.
Finally, all three stopped, and stepped back. Kristin hurried to a stand and got a box of tissues, then hurried back to ‘thanks’ from Emma and Alexis.
Emma finished wiping her eyes, then, “I’ve gotta go, guys, I want to get to that blogger’s house early….” How to finish; she didn’t know.
“And then what?” Alexis asked, “Please tell us that you won’t dress up like a little babydoll girl on the move.”
“I agree,” Kristin added, “There’s got to be a better way.”
“Look, you two, that was just a preliminary thought. Nothing is set in stone, as they say.” She opened her hands, “I’ll get there—wherever ‘there’ is—and I will just have to do what I have to do.” She reached for her two small pieces of luggage plus her backpack filled with water bottles, snack food, light clothes and toiletries, flashlight and other emergency items.
“No you don’t.” Alexis said, and grabbed one.
“That’s right,” Kristin said, and grabbed the other, “We are sticking with you until you’re out of sight.”
“Okay, I’ll just carry my backpack.”
So the three best friends went down the one flight of stairs, through the main entrance, and out to their little car parked right in front. They all deposited their bags, then another round of hugs happened.
At the end Alexis said, “You called your dad, right?”
“Yes.”
“And you told him your plan?”
“Alex, I didn’t tell him everything, just that I was planning for all of us to come home soon for a vacation, including you and Kristin, if you want.”
“I’d love to meet your family, Emma,” Kristin said.
“Good, and I’ll stay in touch with you girls, but my dad doesn’t need to know what I’m doing, yet.”
“All right,” Alexis said, “But please call us every night.”
“I’ll try, but I can’t guarantee it.” Alexis wasn’t satisfied, she could see that, “I’ll do the best I can.”
“Okay.”
Then one more round of hugs, then all hugged together again, then Emma just pulled away, got in the car, started it, and started out, and just before she knew she’d be out of sight, she looked back and waved, and her two best friends in the whole world waved wildly back. As staunch as Alexis was, her wave was just as exuberant as Kristin’s.
Then she couldn’t see them. Her heart banged, she choked, her stomach tightened, and tears began again. She stopped and pulled to the side of the street and let them come…not too many but necessary to let them go. Then she steeled herself…this will be my life…I’m on my way.

Epiphany by Gary Stephens

“We’re going to use nine megaton warheads in space and we’re not sure they’re large enough to be effective. Why would you even consider using kiloton-range surface-to-air warheads as back-up?” The answer was succinct. “Because they’re all we have.”
