“Cat's Eye,” he said flatly. Traleau stared up at the man's hard face, breath still. “This is the first time I will see how you fight. Carry yourself boldly, lest you bring shame to the named men.” His stare was stone hard and sky ageless.
“Why...” the boy began, then swallowed his words.
“Speak.”
“You're a killer too, aren't you? Why does it matter to you?” His voice was subdued, aimless. He barely heard himself, yet Helmkeeper shifted slightly, his trophies clanging in response.
“Pride,” he said. Traleau waited for more, but it became clear he'd find no further answer and he walked around the great figure, only to be stopped. “Cat's Eye.”
“Yes?” Feeling defiant, he did not turn to face Helmkeeper.
“I hope that some day, you will be ready to fight me. Do not die until then.”
