The 18th century is approaching its end. Modern technology and worldwide exploration journeys are becoming more common everywhere. Alberto is the second lieutenant on Excelsior, a military brig involved mostly on sea-patrolling missions. Sometimes, troops and ammunition are also transported to far away command posts. These trips are usually routine and uneventful.
However, there is a legend circulating among sailors, about a certain "Island" where gold is as cheap as iron or even cheaper. Nobody knows where this Island is located but a few dozens ship had reached it in the past and came back with fabulous riches.
During a longer range journey to the Southern Seas, the ship encounters a powerful storm. Soon, visions of other places and times begin to haunt Alberto.
Back in his city, he meets a mysterious old woman, Mei Hsing, who says he will visit the Island in the near future. When this happens during the following year, Alberto becomes involved in complex events that make him question the surrounding reality and even his own existence. The fabulous realm he gets to explore looks nothing like the world from his space and time.
In this space and time so different from Earth, Alberto meets Nivit and they are both swept into an unexpected journey of adventure and self-discovery that carries him through stranger and stranger realms.

An original story full of unexpected twists
Butterfly's Dream" presents an original story, full of unexpected twists. Adventure, fantasy, science fiction, romance, and history blend in harmony in a novel that is both entertaining and deep. The writing style is at the same time fluid and expressive, keeping the reader alert and curious. Once you had the chance to dive into the text, it's hard to put the book aside.
The ending is at the same time spectacular and unexpected. Now I can't wait to read the sequel. Hopefully, it will be published soon.
Not a typical scifi book
You will not find here a typical sci-fi book. The account takes root from the famous Chuang Tzu’s anecdote about the philosopher dreaming he was a butterfly. Structured into two unequal parts, it begins like a typical historical fiction. Alberto, a navy officer on a military brig, is sailing towards a fort from the Southern Seas. Life looks peaceful and routine. However, an incoming storm sends him on a mystic journey of exploration and self-discovery. Besides adventure, an emotional love story also develops in the second part.
One could call the novel a historical fantasy that evolves into sci-fi. Most of the text comes from the first-person perspective found in Alberto’s personal log. The action takes unanticipated turns that surprise the reader every ten or twenty pages. The novel goes beyond simple entertainment. It made me think about fundamental questions related to personal existence and identity. A very enjoyable experience.
A novel full of imagination
This is a novel full of imagination, hard to describe in detail without spoiling it. It looks more like a fusion of genres. I would say it's a beautiful mix of science fiction, fantasy, adventure, history, and romance. The style is simple, fluid, and expressive, making it pleasant and easy to read. Alberto' adventures unfold naturally, taking many unexpected turns as the story goes on. The book is full of deep questions about the meaning of life and the sense of our existence.
