PROLOGUE
Children see butterflies, men with beards, giraffes, and dragons in
clouds on a summer’s day. A silly game we outgrow, but we forget the
mind craves patterns because the brain is an image-making machine.
The International Space Station, for example, does not zigzag across
the velvety black sky as our eyes would have us believe. Its coordinates,
degree of altitude from the azimuth, and speed are as precise as
modern computers can achieve and as accurate as an astronomical
chart of the motion of the stars in the celestial coordinate system. It is
simply the mind seeking an explanation—a narrative, in a word—for the shiny object two-hundred-fifty miles above our heads shooting across the night sky so fast that it transverses the entire American continent in seconds.
Looking down from the ISS, an astronaut might say the Great Lakes doesn’t look much like the maps of cartographers—for example, Lake Superior, the largest and coldest of them with its emerald-green
waters, resembles a swordfish breeching.
Its upper snout appears to have embedded its bill into the sister cities Duluth, Minnesota, and Superior, Wisconsin, the terminus for shipping the iron-rich deposits of the 80-mile-long Gogebic Iron Range. The resemblance fails here
because what would be the eye is too small, a speck of island in a chain
called the Apostles, and the place where the swordfish’s eye should be
located is Devil’s Island rather than either of the largest two, Stockton
or Outer Islands. Somewhere around Sault Ste. Marie, with its famous
Soo locks, is the fish’s anus.
To the left is Canada, to the right is the United States. The International Bridge spans the two nations above
the St. Mary’s River. Ice shuts down shipping on the lakes in the winter,
of course, but 10,000 vessels make the annual journey and hundreds of men and some women make their livelihoods from these inland seas carved from glaciers eons ago, and like the earth itself, are destined one day to disappear.
In the years before smart phones, googling, Tik Tok, and constant
emailing, sailors looked forward to arriving at the Soo to pick up mail,
especially if there had been too little time in port . . .
