Murder being traditionally crime/noir’s domain, many of these horror tales poach on that territory based on the reasoning that, while murder is almost always attributed to sex, greed, or revenge (workplace violence has an obvious motive), few kinds of horror terrify as much as that random, motiveless murderer lurking among us. Even spree killers have reasons that make “sense” in their warped psyches. But to comprehend an amoral sadist operating out of a distorted psychopathy to fulfil a fantasy need makes the bogeymen hiding under children’s beds a clichéd trope for a cheap jump-scare. But, as with every collection of stories, they must speak for themselves.
